Longdown Railway Station
Longdown was a railway station serving Longdown, a small village in Devon, England located on the Teign Valley Line between the towns of Newton Abbot and Exeter. Longdown is in the parish of Holcombe Burnell, south of the A30 road, about four miles west of Exeter. History Longdown station was situated around a mile from the village and was located in an extensive woodland setting, situated between the 836-yard Perridge and the 248-yard Culver Tunnels. in 1916 a five-lever signal box was built here. A looped siding which was used almost entirely for coal and timber for the Culver Estate until November 1956. Between 19 September 1943 and July 1954 a 1100 ft running loop was present, built to allow trains to pass when the main line from Newton Abbot to Exeter was blocked. The up line was signaled for reversible running. Passenger numbers reached their peak in the 1930s with seven daily services provided each way between Exeter and Heathfield. Holcombe Burnell
Holcombe Burnell is a civil parish in Devon, England, the church of which is about 4 miles west of Exeter City centre. There is no village clustered around the church, rather the nearest village within the parish is Longdown. Only the manor house and two cottages are situated next to the church. The former manor house next to the church is today known as Holcombe Burnell Barton having subsequently been used as a farmhouse. The manor was in the historical Hundred of Wonford. Church of St John the Baptist The church was dedicated originally to St Nicholas, mentioned in a charter dated 1150. In the 15th century the manor was acquired by a member of the Denys family of Orleigh in Devon, and the church was then substantially reconstructed. The church was restored in the Victorian era in 1843–1844, to the plans of the Exeter architect John Hayward with Henry Lloyd of Bristol. The north aisle was added at that time. A30 Road
The A30 is a major road in England, running WSW from London to Land's End. The road has been a principal axis in Britain from the 17th century to early 19th century, as a major coaching route. It used to provide the fastest route from London to the South West by land until a century before roads were numbered; nowadays much of this function is performed by the M3 (including A316) and A303 roads. The road has kept its principal status in the west from Honiton, Devon to Land's End where it is mainly dual carriageway and retains trunk road status.
