''Long Live Père Ubu!'' is an album by the American band Pere Ubu, released in 2009. It is a soundtrack to a musical adaptation of the play from which the band took its name. The band performed its adaptation at (Le) Poisson Rouge. David Thomas referred to ''Long Live Père Ubu!'' as the first "true" punk album to be released in 30 years. Sarah Jane Morris played the part of Ubu's wife. Pere Ubu
Pere Ubu is an American rock group formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1975. The band had a variety of long-term and recurring band members, with singer David Thomas being the only member staying throughout the band's lifetime. They released their debut album ''The Modern Dance'' in 1978 and followed with several more LPs before disbanding in 1982. Thomas reformed the group in 1987, continuing to record and tour. Describing their sound as "avant-garage," Pere Ubu's work drew inspiration from sources such as musique concrète, 60s rock, performance art, and the industrial environments of the American Midwest. While the band achieved little commercial success, they have exerted a wide influence on subsequent underground music. Why I Hate Women
''Why I Hate Women'' is the 13th studio album by Pere Ubu, released in 2006. Keith Moliné stepped in for departed longtime guitarist Tom Herman, making this the first Pere Ubu studio album not to feature any of the group's founders (except for David Thomas) either as members or as guests. Explaining the title, Thomas claimed that ''Why I Hate Women'' is a tribute to an imaginary book that Jim Thompson could have written. Production The album's lyrics were inspired by Thomas's love of noir detective fiction. ''Why I Remix Women'', a remix of the album, was made available via mail order and at the band's concerts. David Thomas remixed the album in 2021, retitled it ''Why I Luv Women'' (with the word "Luv" covering the word "Hate" in the style of a red, off-kilter sticker) and first reissued this version as part of the box set ''Nuke The Whales 2006-2014'' in April 2022 through Fire Records. ''Ubu Roi'' (; "Ubu the King" or "King Ubu") is a play by French writer Alfred Jarry, then 23 years old. It was first performed in Paris in 1896, by Aurélien Lugné-Poe's Théâtre de l'Œuvre at the Nouveau-Théâtre (today, the Théâtre de Paris). The production's single public performance baffled and offended audiences with its unruliness and obscenity. (Le) Poisson Rouge
(Le) Poisson Rouge (often referred to as LPR) is a music venue and multimedia art cabaret in New York City founded in 2008 by Justin Kantor and David Handler on the former site of the Village Gate at 158 Bleecker Street. The performance space was designed and engineered by John Storyk/WSDG. It has become known for its focus on artistry, bringing contemporary classical music into the club setting, and offering a variety of set ups so that a seated classical performance can be followed by a standing set by a rock band or a DJ. Responding to a performance of Olivier Messiaen's ''Quartet for the End of Time'' featuring pianist Bruce Brubaker at LPR, ''The Wall Street Journal'' reported: "The crowd – many of whom wouldn't even have known who Messiaen was – sat in rapt silence, and roared their approval at the end." David Thomas (musician)
David Lynn Thomas (born 1953) is an American singer, songwriter and musician based in Great Britain. He was one of the founding members of the short-lived proto-punkers Rocket from the Tombs (1974–1975), in which he played under the moniker "Crocus Behemoth," and of post-punk group Pere Ubu (1975–present, intermittently). He has also released several solo albums. Though primarily a singer, he sometimes plays melodeon, trombone, musette, guitar or other instruments. Thomas has described his artistic focus as being the "gestalt of culture, geography and sound". Common themes crop up throughout much of his work, such as the US Interstate Highway system, images of roadside or "junk" tourist culture, Brian Wilson, AM radio, and many others. Sarah Jane Morris (singer)
Sarah Jane Morris (born 21 March 1959) is an English singer of pop, jazz, rock and R&B and a songwriter. Biography In 1982, Morris joined The Republic as lead singer. A London-based Afro-Caribbean-Latin band, they received enormous publicity from the music press including cover stories with ''NME'' and ''City Limits'' and a documentary for Granada TV. But the band was deemed too political for radio play, with the exception of Capital Radio. The Republic were signed to Charlie Gillett's Oval Records Ltd and released an EP entitled ''Three Songs From The Republic'' and two singles entitled "One Chance" and "My Spies". ''The Independent'' is a British online newspaper. It was established in 1986 as a national morning printed paper. Nicknamed the ''Indy'', it began as a broadsheet and changed to tabloid format in 2003. The last printed edition was published on Saturday 26 March 2016, leaving only the online edition.
