Lokve, Serbia
Lokve (Serbian Cyrillic: Локве, Romanian: ''Locve'', ''Sân-Mihai'' or ''Simiai'') is a village in Serbia. It is situated in the Alibunar municipality, in the South Banat District, Vojvodina province. The village has a Romanian ethnic majority (90.85%) and a population of 2,002 people (2002 census). The town often seems rather empty since more than half of population of Lokve lives abroad - mainly in USA and Switzerland. The town has an interesting origin story, there was 3 men and a woman who had sheep, they decided to set up at the ends of the town to protect the sheep. The town grew from there to now what it is today. Name and Name History In Serbian, the village is known as ''Lokve'' (Локве), in Romanian as ''Sân-Mihai'' or ''Simiai'', and in Hungarian as ''Végszentmihály''. Lake Lokve or Lokvarsko Lake ( hr, Lokvarsko jezero ) is an artificial lake in northwestern Croatia. It was created by damming the Lokve River in the 1950s. Location Lake Lokve is located in the mountainous Gorski Kotar region, about 30km east of the city Rijeka. Lokve () is a small settlement east of Senovo in the Municipality of Krško in eastern Slovenia. The area is part of the traditional region of Styria. Lokve (; it, Loqua) is a village in western Slovenia in the Municipality of Nova Gorica. It is located on the Trnovo Forest Plateau, above the Vipava Valley in the Gorizia region of the Slovene Littoral. Mass grave Lokve is the site of a former mass grave from the Second World War. The Lokve Mass Grave ( sl, Grobišče Lokve) is located in a depression near house no. 43 in the village. It contained the remains of Italian soldiers from the 10th Assault Vehicle Flotilla killed at the site in March 1945. The remains were discovered during excavations in December 2003 and were reburied in May 2004.
