Lodi (Pashtun Tribe)
__NOTOC__ Lodi is a Pashtun tribe from the Ghilji group of Pashtuns. Traditionally, they have also been considered as being part of the Bettani tribal confederacy. The Lodi tribe consists of many sub-tribes, most of whom are now settled in the Tank, Frontier Region Tank, Lakki Marwat and Dera Ismail Khan districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of modern-day Pakistan. These tribes migrated to their present-day location from around Ghazni (Zabulistan region) in modern-day Afghanistan by crossing the Gomal Pass throughout different times in history. Two tribes among the Lodi ended up establishing their own empires, the Sur tribe established the Sur Dynasty and the Prangi tribe established the Lodi Dynasty. The Lodi dynasty ( ps, لودي سلسله; fa, سلسله لودی) was an Afghan dynasty that ruled the Delhi Sultanate from 1451 to 1526. It was the fifth and final dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate, and was founded by Bahlul Khan Lodi when he replaced the Sayyid dynasty. Lodhi Colony is a Central Government Officers and Staff Residential Colony in South Central part of New Delhi, built in the 1940s, and lies adjacent to the Lodhi Gardens and Lodhi Road. Lodhi (caste)
The Lodhi (or Lodha, Lodh) is a community of agriculturalists, found in India. There are many in Madhya Pradesh, to where they had emigrated from Uttar Pradesh. The Lodhi are categorised as an Other Backward Class but claim Rajput ties and prefer to be known as "Lodhi-Rajput", although they have no account of their Rajput origin or prevailing Rajput traditions. Etymology Robert Vane Russell, an administrator of the British Raj, described several possible etymologies for ''Lodhi'', including derivation from ''lod'' ("clod"), or ''lodh'', a tree whose bark the Lodhi of Northern India gather to make dye. Lodhi Road (Hindi: लोधी रोड, Urdu: لودھی مارگ) in New Delhi, India, is named after the Lodi Gardens, Lodhi Gardens located on it. Two Mughal (tribe), Mughal mausoleums, Humayun's Tomb and Safdarjung's Tomb, lie at the eastern and western ends of the road respectively. Lodhi (Lodi, Lohi, Lozi) is a Munda language, or dialect cluster, of India. Kharia Thar is only spoken by one quarter of ethnic Lodhi in Orissa. However, while admitting that Lodhi is related to Sora, a Munda language, ''Ethnologue'' classifies it as Indic ( Bengali–Assamese), and it is considered a variety of Hindi in the Indian census. It may be that there are both Munda and Indic varieties subsumed under the name Lodhi. However, Anderson (2008:299) suggests that Lodhi (Lodha) of northern Orissa may be an endangered Munda language; some members use the autonym Sabar or Sabara. The Lodha Muslim are a tribal or Adivasi community found in the state of West Bengal in India. They are a Muslim tribe. Origin The exact circumstances of the conversion of the Lodha Muslims to Islam remains shrouded in mystery, but the conversion process was gradual, and the community still preserve many of their pre-Islamic customs. They are found mainly in the Midnapore District, in particular in the villages of Madhya Hingli, Uttar Rani Chak, Gamatub, Maniktala, Laldighi, Chapbasan, Sodhpur and Piyada. . Present circumstances The traditional occupation of the Lodha was hunting and gathering, in particular catching of snakes and toads, and then selling their skins. Lodha people are one of Schedule Tribes and PVTGs of India, primarily living in West Bengal and Odisha. Lodhas of West Bengal mostly live the Paschim Medinipur and Jhargham districts. A section of the Lodha has converted to Islam, and formed a distinct community called the Lodha Muslims. Demographics As per 2001 census, Lodhas numbered 84,966 and formed 1.9 per cent of the scheduled tribe population of West Bengal. They had a literacy rate of 34.8 per cent. Maleeha Lodhi ( ur, ; born 15 November 1952) is a Pakistani diplomat, political scientist, and a former Pakistan's Representative to the United Nations. She was the first woman to hold the position.
