Locus Awards
The Locus Awards are an annual set of literary awards voted on by readers of the science fiction and fantasy magazine ''Locus'', a monthly magazine based in Oakland, California. The awards are presented at an annual banquet. In addition to the plaques awarded to the winners, publishers of winning works are honored with certificates, which is unique in the field. Originally a poll of ''Locus'' subscribers only, voting is now open to anyone, but the votes of subscribers count twice as much as the votes of non-subscribers. The award was inaugurated in 1971, and was originally intended to provide suggestions and recommendations for the Hugo Awards. They have come to be considered a prestigious prize in science fiction, fantasy and horror literature. Desolation Road
''Desolation Road'' is a 1988 science fiction novel written by Ian McDonald. It was McDonald's first published novel. The plot takes place on a far future Mars in a town that develops around an oasis in the terraformed Martian desert. McDonald published a sequel, ''Ares Express'', in 2001. Plot In the future, scientist Dr. Alimantando is trekking across the desert of a terraformed Mars and meets a humanoid "greenperson", who claims to have traveled through time to make sure Alimantando is in the right place at the right time to fulfill his destiny. It comes in the form of a 700-year-old sentient ROTECH environmental engineering module, or orph, which lies dying in the desert. Jonathan Lethem
Jonathan Allen Lethem (; born February 19, 1964) is an American novelist, essayist, and short story writer. His first novel, ''Gun, with Occasional Music'', a genre work that mixed elements of science fiction and detective fiction, was published in 1994. In 1999, Lethem published '' Motherless Brooklyn'', a National Book Critics Circle Award-winning novel that achieved mainstream success. In 2003, he published '' The Fortress of Solitude'', which became a ''New York Times'' Best Seller. In 2005, he received a MacArthur Fellowship. ''Gun, with Occasional Music'' is a 1994 novel by American writer Jonathan Lethem that blends science fiction and hardboiled detective fiction. The novel won Lethem the Locus Award for Best First Novel in 1995. Patricia Anthony
Patricia Marie Anthony (March 29, 1947 – July 2, 2013) was an American science fiction and slipstream author. Anthony published her first science fiction novel in 1992 with ''Cold Allies'', about the arrival of extraterrestrials in the midst of a 21st-century Third World War. This was followed by ''Brother Termite'', ''Conscience of the Beagle'', ''The Happy Policeman'', ''Cradle of Splendor'', and ''God's Fires'', each of which combined science fiction plots with other genres in unconventional ways. Several of her short-fiction works were republished in the 1998 collection ''Eating Memories''. ''China Mountain Zhang'' is a 1992 science fiction novel by American writer Maureen F. McHugh. The novel is made up of several stories loosely intertwined. Title The novel's title derives from the name of the protagonist, a young gay man of mixed Chinese and Hispanic ancestry who goes by the name Rafael Zhang in non-Chinese contexts and Zhang Zhongshan in Chinese contexts. His Chinese given name, "Zhongshan", is written with the characters that have the primary meanings "center" and "mountain"; the Mandarin name for China also begins with the character meaning "center" or "middle". Kathe Koja (born 1960) is an American writer. She was initially known for her intense speculative fiction for adults, but has written Young adult literature, young adult novels, the historical fiction ''Under the Poppy'' trilogy, and a fictional biography of Christopher Marlowe.
