The Northern Territory is a federal Australian territory in north-central Australia. It is the third largest Australian federal division with an area of but the least populous with inhabitants as at June 2019. Estimated resident population, 30 June 2019. The Northern Territory is divided administratively into 17 Local government areas (LGAs) generally known as Councils who are responsible for providing local government services. Area types As of 1 July 2008, there were two classifications of local government in the Northern Territory: # Municipalities (predominantly inner-city suburban areas and smaller rural towns), of which there were five; and # Shires or Regions (predominantly rural or outer suburban areas), of which there were eleven shire councils. Barkly Tableland
The Barkly Tableland is a rolling plain of grassland in Australia. It runs from the eastern part of the Northern Territory into western Queensland. It is one of the five regions in the Northern Territory and covers , 21% of the Northern Territory. The Barkly Tableland runs parallel to the southern shore of the Gulf of Carpentaria, from about Mount Isa, Queensland to near Daly Waters. History William Landsborough was the first non-Indigenous Australian person to explore the tableland, and named it after Sir Henry Barkly, then governor of Victoria. In 1877 the overlander, Nathaniel Buchanan and Sam Croker crossed the Barkly Tableland and rode on to the Overland Telegraph Line opening new land for settlement. It was not until the introduction of generous leasing arrangements on the Barkly in the late 1870s that the region became more settled. MacDonnell Region
The MacDonnell Regional Council is a local government area of the Northern Territory, Australia. The region covers an area of and had an estimated population of 6,863 people in June 2018. Geography MacDonnell Regional Council occupies the south of the Northern Territory and is the only LGA that borders with South Australia, specifically with Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara in the southwest and the Pastoral Unincorporated Area in the southeast. Freds Pass, Northern Territory
Freds Pass is an outer rural locality in Darwin. The name Fred's Pass originally referred to a gap in the Daly Ranges through which the Fred's Pass Road (later part of the Stuart Highway, since bypassed) ran, and was named by surveyor W. P. Auld for his fellow-explorer Fred Litchfield, whose name is also commemorated in the nearby Litchfield shire. Events The Freds Pass Rural Show is held each May at the beginning of the dry season at Freds Pass Reserve. The event was first held in 1978 as a school fete and has continued grow over the years. In 2009, the show played host to over 200 exhibitors and attracted over 20,000 visitors. The show celebrates and exhibits achievements in local agriculture, horticulture, sport and community endeavours, as well as featuring many sideshows, rides and demonstrations. Litchfield Municipality
The Litchfield Council is a local government area of the Northern Territory of Australia on the eastern and southeastern outskirts of the Darwin-Palmerston urban area. The municipality covers an area of , and was created by the Northern Territory government on 6 September 1985. Geography The Litchfield Municipality is bounded by the Adelaide River to the east, Van Diemen Gulf and the Coomalie Shire in the south and the City of Darwin and City of Palmerston to the northwest. Town Of Katherine
The Katherine Town Council is a local government area in the Northern Territory, established on 3 March 1978. It is situated south of Darwin, and covers an area of . The Town of Katherine is an established residential township with a commercial area and rural areas on the outskirts of the town. The original inhabitants of the town were the Dagoman and Jawoyn Aboriginal people. European settlement of the area dates from 1871, following the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line. Growth of the town began to start from 1926, following the opening of the railway line. The township grew around the railway line. Nhulunbuy
Nhulunbuy () is a township that is the sixth largest population centre in the Northern Territory of Australia. Nhulunbuy was created on the Gove Peninsula in north-east Arnhem Land when a bauxite mine and a deep water port were established in the late 1960s, followed by an alumina refinery. The alumina refinery closed in May 2014, and Nhulunbuy was reduced by 700 to 3,240 by the time of the 2016 Australian census. The median age in the town was 32 in the 2016 census. History This area in Northeast Arnhem Land has been home to the Yolngu Aboriginal people for at least 40,000 years. Situated in the far north-eastern corner of the Northern Territory, the region covers an area of and had a population of approximately 10,345 in June 2018. Northern Territory Rates Act Area
The Northern Territory Rates Act Area, formerly the Darwin Rates Act Area, is an unincorporated area in the Northern Territory of Australia located in Darwin and where municipal services are provided by the Northern Territory Government. It is an industrial area where rates revenue goes directly to the Northern Territory Government. It consists the localities of East Arm, Tivendale and Wishart, and parts of the localities of Berrimah, Charles Darwin and Hidden Valley. The only locality in the area with a residential population is East Arm, which had a population of 13 in 2016 (all of whom were male). The City of Darwin is a local government area of the Northern Territory, Australia. It includes the central business district of the capital, Darwin City, and represents two-thirds of its metropolitan population.
