The Coomalie Community Government Council is a local government area in Australia's Northern Territory, situated south of Darwin and Palmerston. The council governs an area of . The shire had a population of 1,391 in June 2018. History Coomalie Community Government Council was established on 7 December 1990, and its first elections were held in 1997. On 1 July 2008, Coomalie Council became one of the 11 Shires in the territory, changed by the Northern Territory Government. Litchfield National Park
Litchfield National Park, covering approximately 1500 km2, is near the township of Batchelor, 100 km south-west of Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. Each year the park attracts over 260,000 visitors. Proclaimed a national park in 1986, it is named after Frederick Henry Litchfield, a Territory pioneer, who explored areas of the Northern Territory from Escape Cliffs in Van Diemen Gulf to the Daly River in 1864. Adelaide River
The Adelaide River is a river in the Northern Territory of Australia. Course and features The river rises in the Litchfield National Park and flows generally northwards to Clarence Strait, joined by eight tributaries including the west branch of the Adelaide River, Coomalie Creek, Margaret River and Marrakai Creek, before discharging into its mouth in Adam Bay in the Clarence Strait. The Adelaide River is crossed by both the Stuart Highway, adjacent to the township of Adelaide River, and the Arnhem Highway near Humpty Doo. Manton Dam
Manton Dam is a small concrete arch dam on the Manton River, approximately south of Darwin, Northern Territory in Australia. The dam was originally constructed by the Department of Defence during the Second World War to provide a reliable supply of fresh water to Darwin, completed in 1942. The reservoir itself is now mostly used for recreation, such as fishing, boating and water skiing, surrounded by a conservation area for native flora and fauna. Current status The much larger Darwin River Dam was commissioned in 1972, with Manton Dam retained for emergency supply. Since then, the Power and Water Corporation has maintained the dam and infrastructure in an inactive state. Since 1989, the Manton Dam Recreation Area has been open to the public within the portfolio of Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife. Stapleton is a rural locality in the Coomalie Shire of the Northern Territory, Australia. It is located approximately northwest of Adelaide River and is situated on Stapleton Creek. Nomenclature Stapleton Creek was named by surveyor Gilbert McMinn in 1870 to honour James L Stapleton, a field operator working on the Overland Telegraph who would later be killed in an incident that led to the 1874 Barrow Creek Massacre. Rum Jungle, Northern Territory
Rum Jungle is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located about 105 kilometres south of Darwin on the East Branch of the Finniss River. It is the site of a uranium deposit, found in 1949, which has been mined. The area derives its name from an incident when a thief stole 750 ounces of gold from miners after getting them drunk with rum. Original uranium mine George Goyder noted an unidentified copper-like green ore in 1869 at "Giants Reef", which was later "rediscovered" and identified to be torbernite. In 1949, John Michael "Jack" White discovered torbernite in old nearby copper shafts. In 1952 the Australian Government funded the setting up of a mine and treatment plant to provide uranium oxide concentrate to the UK-US Combined Development Agency under a contract which ran from 1953 to 1962. __NOTOC__ Coomalie Creek is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located about south-east of the territory capital of Darwin. The locality consists of land bounded to the east by the Adelaide River and whose western boundary lies the immediate west of the Stuart Highway which passes through the locality in a north–south alignment. This locality is named after Coomalie Creek, which flows through the locality, and whose name is considered to be corruption of the aboriginal name, Gumili. Its boundaries and name were gazetted on 29 October 1997. The 2016 Australian census which was conducted in August 2016 reports that Coomalie Creek had 20 people living within its boundaries. Coomalie Creek is located within the federal division of Lingiari, the territory electoral division of Daly and within the local government area of the Coomalie Shire.
