Lloyd Triestino
Lloyd Triestino was a major shipping company, created in 1919 when the city of Trieste became part of Italy in the settlement after the First World War. It ran passenger services on ocean liners around the world. Seriously harmed by Second World War, in which it lost 68 ships, it recovered to run passenger services with new ships on routes as far as Australia. In 2006, with the business by then mainly container freight, the company's name was changed to Italia Marittima. Background The company was founded as Österreichischer Lloyd (or "Austrian Lloyd") as an insurance company in 1833. In 1836 the company went into shipping. It became one of the world's biggest shipping companies by managing most of Austria-Hungary's overseas trade and passenger travel until 1918. It ran regular services from Trieste to the Near East, India, China and the Far East, Brazil, the US and Northern Europe. It was one of the first companies to use steamships. ''LT Cortesia'' is a 90,465gt container ship owned by German-based Conti Reederei, managed by NSB Niederelbe and operated as part of the Evergreen Line fleet. She is the lead ship of a class of eight Post-Panamax ships with a capacity of 8,100 TEU, built between May 2005 and May 2006 by Samsung Heavy Industries, the vessel was built to replace the 5,600-TEU U-type vessels then deployed. ''LT Cortesia'', like all ships in the class, are on a long-term charter to the Evergreen Line fleet from Conti-NSB/Germany. History On 2 January 2008 at 0500 GMT the container ship ''LT Cortesia'' ran aground in the Dover Strait. The ship was en route to the Suez Canal when it ran aground on Varne Bank, nine miles south west of Dover. Guido Marussig (1885–1972) was an Italian painter. Biography He was born in Trieste. After his initial training at the Scuola Industriale Triestina, Guido Marussig moved to Venice to attend the Academy of Fine Arts thanks to a scholarship from Trieste City Council. In 1905 he participated in the Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte di Venezia, and was to continue to do so in the following years. He was a Symbolist painter influenced by the work of the Vienna Secession, and particularly the art of Gustav Klimt, and he also experimented with engraving techniques. He contributed illustrations to the magazine ''L’Eroica'' and from 1918 to 1937 he taught at the ''Scuola del Libro'' in Milan, where he had moved in 1916. Marcello Dudovich (21 March 1878 – 31 March 1962) was an Italian painter, illustrator, and poster designer. Together with Leonetto Cappiello, Adolfo Hohenstein, Giovanni Maria Mataloni and Leopoldo Metlicovitz he is considered one of the progenitors of Italian poster design. Biography Marcello Dudovich was born in 1878 in Trieste to an Italian mother and a Dalmatian father. His father, Antonio Dudovich, born in Traù (Trogir), Dalmatia, was a fervent Italian irredentist who fought alongside Giuseppe Garibaldi during the Third Italian War of Independence, and worked for the insurance company Assicurazioni Generali. SS ''Galileo Galilei'' was an ocean liner built in 1963 by Cantieri Riuniti dell' Adriatico, Monfalcone, Italy for Lloyd Triestino's Italy—Australia service. In 1979, she was converted to a cruise ship, and subsequently sailed under the names ''Galileo'' and ''Meridian''. She sank in the Strait of Malacca in 1999 as the ''Sun Vista''. History Ordered by Lloyd Triestino in 1960, ''Galileo Galilei'' was built in Italy for the Australian immigrant route. ''Galileo Galilei'' was launched on 2 July 1961.
