Liverpool Chads
Liverpool Chads are a defunct motorcycle speedway team who were based at the Stanley Stadium in Prescot Road, Fairfield, Liverpool, England.Bamford, R & Jarvis J.(2001). League racing first took place in 1929 with the formation of the English Dirt Track League, effectively a Northern League, which ran alongside the Southern League. In 1930 the team competed in the Northern League. They were known during this time as Liverpool Merseysiders. The Liverpool promotion were attached to the Belle Vue Aces promotion during this time but midway through 1937 the club folded and the riders moved to Belle Vue. When the sport was revived in 1949 the team were known as Liverpool Chads. The team's nickname referred to a popular piece of cartoon graffiti at the time known as a ''Chad''. Stanley Greyhound Stadium (Liverpool)
Stanley Greyhound Stadium (Liverpool) was a greyhound racing track in east Liverpool. It is not to be confused with Stanley Greyhound Stadium in County Durham also known as Murray Park. Origins In 1927 a race developed between two companies to construct the first greyhound stadium in Liverpool. The race was won by the Liverpool Greyhound Club Ltd (LGC) when they opened Breck Park Stadium in April 1927. The other company the Greyhound Racing Association had chosen a site on a former brick works and clay pit for their track that would be known as the Stanley Greyhound Stadium and it opened just four months later. The Stanley track was south of Prescot Road and north of Edge Lane in the Old Swan area of Liverpool and ran parallel to the railway line. Speedway World Championship
The World Championship of Speedway is an international competition between the highest-ranked motorcycle speedway riders of the world, run under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). The first official championships were held in 1936. Today, this official FIM championship is organised as a series of Speedway Grand Prix events, where points are awarded according to performance in the event and tallied up at the end of each season. However, up to 1994, it was run as a single-night event after qualifying rounds during the season, leading up to a big final of 20 heats, where points were awarded according to riders' heat placings and then tallied up at the end. Before the World Championship received its formal recognition from the ACU and the FIM in 1936, other unofficial Speedway World Championships were staged between 1931 and 1935, in Europe, South America and Australasia. 1960 Provincial Speedway League
The 1960 Provincial Speedway League was the first season of the re-incarnated Provincial League, ten motorcycle speedway teams took part. Summary The league was dominated by Rayleigh, Poole and Bristol. Rayleigh and Poole finished on the same points, but Rayleigh triumphed with a superior number of race points scored. At the end of the season Liverpool and Yarmouth folded and Bristol closed after their track was sold for redevelopment. 1953 Speedway National League Division Two
The 1953 National League Division Two was the eighth post-war season of the second tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Summary The League was reduced at the start of the season again to 10 teams with Oxford Cheetahs dropping down to the Southern League whilst Ashfield closed and Liverpool folded mid-season. Cradley Heath 'merged' with Wolverhampton from the Southern League but used the Wolverhampton Wasps moniker, so to all intents and purposes they had closed. Coventry Bees clinched their first title by a single point. Wolverhampton rider Mike Rogers died on 6 June 1953, the day after receiving critical injuries at Monmore Green Stadium racing against Liverpool. 1952 Speedway National League Division Two
The 1952 National League Division Two was the seventh post-war season of the second tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Summary The post-war boom was now fading and the League was shortened to 12 teams with Division Three now defunct and continued only on a regional basis. Previous champions Norwich Stars had been promoted to Division One. Newcastle, Walthamstow and Halifax had closed whilst Fleetwood Flyers changed to Fleetwood Knights and ran only open meetings. Poole Pirates were the only new entrant, promoted from the former lower tier. Poole Pirates won the title, having won Division Three in the previous season. 1951 Speedway National League Division Two
The 1951 National League Division Two was the sixth post-war season of the second tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Summary The League was extended again with 18 teams starting the season. New entrants were Motherwell Eagles and there were again three teams promoted from Division Three - the champions Oxford Cheetahs, third place finishers Leicester Hunters and Liverpool Chads (despite finishing 8th). Plymouth Devils moved back down in the opposite direction. Norwich Stars retained their title. However after the season had finished a fourth rider in five years was killed at their Firs Stadium. 21-year-old Bob Howes died after hitting the fence during a training practice race on 10 November 1951. Southampton Saints and Sheffield Tars resigned in mid-season and their records were expunged. 1950 Speedway National League Division Three
The 1950 National League Division Three was the fourth season of British speedway's National League Division Three The league was reduced from 13 teams to 10. Halifax Dukes, Plymouth, Yarmouth and Hanley had all moved up to Division Two whilst Hastings Saxons dropped out. The two new sides were Aldershot Shots and St Austell Gulls whilst Tamworth changed their nickname from 'Hounds' to 'Tammies'. Oxford Cheetahs, who had finished bottom of the table during their inaugural league season in 1949, rose spectacularly up the league to win the title. The Oxford team was made up from an entirely new set of riders including Harry Saunders, signed as captain from Tamworth for £750, Pat Clarke from Rayleigh for £250, Bill Osborne from Walthamstow, Raymond Buster Brown from Wembley and Eric Irons from Cradley. The 1949 National League Division Three was the third season of British speedway's National League Division Three. The league expanded to 13 teams from 12. Cradley Heath, Southampton and Coventry had all moved up to Division Two whilst Wombwell dropped out. The five new sides were Halifax Dukes, Liverpool Chads, Leicester Hunters, Rayleigh Rockets and Oxford Cheetahs. Swindon Robins replaced Hull Angels mid-season and Hanley Potters won the title on race points difference from Yarmouth Bloaters. Billy Bales of Yarmouth topped the averages. 1937 Provincial Speedway League
The 1937 Provincial Speedway League was the second season of the Provincial League. Seven speedway teams started the season. From the previous season's finishers, Plymouth Panthers had dropped out but Leicester, Birmingham (Hall Green) and Norwich Stars joined up. Leicester withdrew mid-season and their record was expunged. Liverpool Merseysiders also withdrew mid-season but their entry was taken over by Belle Vue. Bristol Bulldogs were the champions and moved up to the National League for the following season. Due to the brevity of the season, teams also competed for the Provincial Trophy in a league format. Leicester had already folded before the competition started and as with the league, Belle Vue replaced Liverpool Merseysiders. The 1936 Provincial Speedway League was the first season of the Provincial League, introduced as a second tier to the National League Six speedway teams started the season. Cardiff withdrew after 9 matches and their record was expunged, with most of their riders joining Nottingham. Southampton Saints were the champions on race points difference over Bristol Bulldogs. Due to the brevity of the season, teams also competed for the Provincial Trophy in a league format. Cardiff had only completed one fixture before folding and their record was expunged. West Ham Hawks which was West Ham Hammers' reserve side, also competed, but raced home meetings at Southampton. Southampton Saints won the trophy to complete the double. 1930 Speedway Northern League
The 1930 Northern League was the second season of speedway in the United Kingdom for Northern British teams. The league was previously known as the English Dirt Track League but the addition of two Scottish teams prompted a name change and 1930 was the inaugural Northern League. The Southern teams also had their second season known as the 1930 Speedway Southern League. The league was won by Belle Vue Aces. Summary There were many team changes from the previous season. Reigning champions Leeds Lions, Halifax, Salford and Middlesbrough dropped out. Manchester White City, Belle Vue and Warrington renewed their participation having withdrawn partway through the previous season. Edinburgh, Glasgow White City and Wombwell were new entrants. 1929 Speedway English Dirt Track League
The 1929 English Dirt Track League was the inaugural season of speedway in the United Kingdom for Northern English teams. There was also a Southern League called the 1929 Speedway Southern League that started during the same year. Summary The season was littered with mid-season withdrawals but eventually the Leeds were crowned champions. In 1930, the league was renamed the Northern League so the league existed for just one year. White City Speedway (Manchester) withdrew from the league after a dispute and would have been crowned champions if they had not done so because they were leading the table at the time. Dennis Atkinson suffered critical injuries on 12 July 1929, following an accident at Cleveland Park Stadium riding in a Golden Helmet meeting. He died the following day.
