Upper Peninsula
The Upper Peninsula of Michigan – also known as Upper Michigan or colloquially the U.P. – is the northern and more elevated of the two major landmasses that make up the U.S. state of Michigan; it is separated from the Lower Peninsula by the Straits of Mackinac. Stephenson is a city in Menominee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 862 at the 2010 census. The city is surrounded by Stephenson Township but is administered autonomously. It is part of the Marinette, WI–MI Micropolitan Statistical Area. History This Menominee River settlement had a Chicago and Northwestern Railroad station setup in 1872. On July 13, 1874, a post office was opened here under the name of Wacedah with Alva F. Burnham as its postmaster. The post office was renamed after local leader Samuel Stephenson on January 10, 1876.
