Little Humboldt River
The Little Humboldt River is a tributary of the Humboldt River, approximately long, in northern Nevada in the western United States. It is an intermittent stream draining a rugged area on the edge of the Owyhee Desert in the Great Basin. It rises in two forks in northern Nevada. The North Fork (45 mi/72 km) rises in northeastern Humboldt County, Nevada, Humboldt County, on the northeast end of the Santa Rosa Range, and flows intermittently to the ESE along the southeast edge of the Owyhee Desert. The South Fork (40 mi/64 km) rises in extreme western Elko County north of Jake Creek Mountain and generally flows WNW. The two forks join in eastern Humboldt County northwest of Winnemucca, Nevada, Winnemucca, with the combined stream flowing southwest along the east side of the Santa Rosa Range to join the Humboldt approximately northeast of Winnemucca. Humboldt River
The Humboldt River is an extensive river drainage system located in north-central Nevada. It extends in a general east-to-west direction from its headwaters in the Jarbidge, Independence, and Ruby Mountains in Elko County, to its terminus in the Humboldt Sink, approximately 225 direct miles away in northwest Churchill County. The Owyhee Desert ecoregion, within the deserts and xeric shrublands biome, is in the Northwestern United States. The Owyhee Uplands Byway passes through the desert. Geography An arid region of canyons, volcanic rock, sagebrush and grass makes up the ~ Owyhee Desert. The desert is in northern Nevada, southwestern Idaho and southeastern Oregon. Great Basin
The Great Basin is the largest area of contiguous endorheic basin, endorheic watersheds, those with no outlets, in North America. Santa Rosa Range
The Santa Rosa Range is a mountain range in Humboldt County, Nevada, United States. Most of the range is included within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The highest peaks in the range are Granite Peak (9732 feet, 2966 m) and Santa Rosa Peak (9701 feet, 2957 m). The range extends for approximately 75 miles (120 km) north from Winnemucca Mountain near Winnemucca through eastern Humboldt County to the border with Oregon. The upper elevations of the southern section of the range are protected as the Santa Rosa-Paradise Peak Wilderness Area. Winnemucca, Nevada
Winnemucca () is the only incorporated city in, and is the county seat of, Humboldt County, Nevada, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 8,431, up 14.0 percent from the 2010 census figure of 7,396. Interstate 80 passes through the city, where it meets U.S. Route 95. History and culture The town was named for the 19th-century Chief Winnemucca of the local Northern Paiute tribe, who traditionally lived in this area. Overgrazing
Overgrazing occurs when plants are exposed to intensive grazing for extended periods of time, or without sufficient recovery periods. It can be caused by either livestock in poorly managed agricultural applications, game reserves, or nature reserves. It can also be caused by immobile, travel restricted populations of native or non-native wild animals. Overgrazing reduces the usefulness, productivity, and biodiversity of the land and is one cause of desertification and erosion.
