Little Calfpasture River
The Little Calfpasture River is a tributary of the Maury River in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is part of the James River watershed. Background The river rises east of Elliott Knob on Great North Mountain in the Allegheny Mountains of western Virginia, in Augusta County. Flowing southwest between North Mountain and Little North Mountain, the Little Calfpasture enters Rockbridge County and joins the Calfpasture River to form the Maury River just upstream of Goshen Pass, a water gap through Little North Mountain. The Little Calfpasture River passes the village of Augusta Springs and the town of Craigsville along its course. Craigsville is a town in Augusta County, Virginia, United States. The population was 923 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Staunton– Waynesboro Micropolitan Statistical Area. History The Craigsville School was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The history of Craigsville can be traced back to 1721 when a Scotch-Irish couple, William and Jeanette Craig, Scottish immigrants, received a land grant from the government for the purpose of farming. They were the first settlers on the land, which eventually came to be named for them. The area grew, however remaining a farming community from 1721 to the 1850s. Goshen Pass
Goshen Pass is a water gap, or gorge, in the Little North Mountain, formed by the passage of the Maury River, approximately northwest of Lexington in Rockbridge County, Virginia. State Route 39 traverses the pass along the banks of the Maury River. Background Goshen Pass is the site of the Matthew Fontaine Maury memorial overlooking the Maury river. After Maury's death, his body was taken from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington to Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. Along the way the coach stopped at the Goshen pass, per Maury's request, to pick some of his favorite flowers, rhododendrons, and mountain-ivy before continuing onward to Richmond. Subsequently, a memorial to him was placed there, consisting of a vertical stone monument, showing Maury's face and an inscription a poem written by Mrs. Margaret Junkin Preston as cited on the webpage. Goshen, Virginia
Goshen is a town in Rockbridge County, Virginia, United States. The population was 361 in the 2010 census. The town is known for hosting Goshen Scout Reservation, one of the largest Boy Scout camps in America. History Goshen was once inhabited by Indian tribes such as the Cherokee and Shawnee. In the 18th century, European settler, Alexander Dunlop and his wife Anna MacFarlane moved to the Calfpasture. A few of the first settlers include Bratton, Lockridge, Graham, Carter, and Davis. The first Goshen council was headed in 1744 by James Patton and John Lewis. Goshen was based on farms, much like today, raising mainly corn. While Goshen was mainly farmland, in the 1800s, Goshen Pass and Panther's Gap was a bustling community with a school, a hotel, a post office, and foundries. The Calfpasture River is a river in the U.S. state of Virginia. It flows about from its source, Gordons Peak in the Allegheny Mountains, to its confluence with the Little Calfpasture River, forming the Maury River. Via the Maury, the Calfpasture's waters flow into the James River, thence Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
