Under-occupied developments in China are mostly unoccupied property developments in China, and mostly referred to as " ghost cities" or "ghost towns". The phenomenon was observed and recorded as early as 2006 by writer Wade Shepard, and subsequently reported by news media over the decades. Terminology Media outlets often label under-occupied development areas in China as '' ghost cities'' or ''ghost towns''. However, the two terms are technically misnomers since the term "ghost town" describes places that previously had economic activity but have since become defunct and abandoned, while many under-occupied developments in China are new installations that have yet to receive residential occupation. Golden Resources Mall
Golden Resources Shopping Mall, or Jin Yuan (abbreviated from Chinese: 金源时代购物中心) is a major shopping mall located near the northwest Fourth Ring Road in Haidian District, Beijing, People's Republic of China. At the time of opening it was the largest mall by gross leasable area. In 2005, it became the world's second-largest mall when South China Mall in Dongguan, China was completed. It can be accessed by the Beijing Subway using Changchunqiao Station on Line 10. In English, the mall has earned the nickname "Great Mall of China", owing to its total area of over six floors. Lanzhou New Area
Lanzhou New Area () is a state-level new area ( special economic and political administration zone) established in 2012 and is under the direct control of the municipal government of Lanzhou, Gansu province. It is located in the valley around Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport, 30 kilometres from the old city of Lanzhou. It is the first state-level new development area in northwestern China, and the fifth state-level new area in the country. Nanhui New City
Nanhui New City () is a planned city located in the Pudong New Area of Shanghai, China. It was formerly called Lingang New City (临港新城) until it was renamed in April 2012. Construction began in 2003 and is scheduled to be completed in 2020, with the German architecture company Gerkan, Marg and Partners leading the project. The project is estimated to have cost $4.5 billion. The city is aimed to house 450,000 to 800,000 residents while attracting 10 million annual tourists. Ordos ( Mongolian: ''Ordos''; ), also known as Ih Ju, is one of the twelve major subdivisions of Inner Mongolia, China. It lies within the Ordos Plateau of the Yellow River. Although mainly rural, Ordos is administered as a prefecture-level city. Its population was 2,153,638 as of the 2020 census and its built-up (or metro) area made up of Ejin Horo Banner and Kangbashi District was home to 366,779 inhabitants, as Dongsheng District (574,442 inhabitants) is not a conurbation yet. Kunming Rail Transit
Kunming Metro, or Kunming Rail Transit, is a rapid transit system in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province. With a population of just over 3 million people, Kunming was one of the largest cities in China without a metro system before its construction. The system currently consists of 6 lines. Background The streets of Kunming have long been congested, and as such there have been talks of a subway system since the late 1990s. A 2006 proposal would have seen construction start in 2008 with a north-south line and an east-west line.
