List Of Snooker Ranking Tournaments
This is a chronological list of snooker ranking tournaments. Ranking tournaments are those that are used for the official system of ranking professional snooker players which is used to determine automatic qualification and seeding for tournaments on the World Snooker Tour. History The first rankings were produced after the 1976 World Snooker Championship and were based on performances in the 1974, 1975 and 1976 World Championships. Because of this system, the 1974 World Snooker Championship is now regarded as being the first ranking tournament. The same system was used for a number of years but the rankings for the 1983/84 season included performances in two additional tournaments during the 1982/83 season. In 1992/93 and from the 2010/11 to the 2015/16 season there were a number of tournaments which contributed to the world rankings but at a lower rate than standard ranking tournaments. Snooker

1979 World Snooker Championship
The 1979 World Snooker Championship (also known as the 1979 Embassy World Snooker Championship for sponsorship reasons) was a ranking professional snooker tournament that took place from 16 to 28 April 1979 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England. Organised by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA), it was the third consecutive World Snooker Championship to be held at the Crucible, the first tournament having taken place in 1977. A qualifying event for the championship was held, producing eight qualifiers who joined the eight invited seeded players in the main event. The tournament was broadcast in the United Kingdom by the BBC, and was sponsored by the Embassy cigarette company. The winner received £10,000 from the total prize fund of £35,000. 1984 Classic (snooker)
The 1984 Lada Classic was the fifth edition of the professional snooker tournament, which took place from 8–15 January 1984. The tournament was played at the Spectrum Arena, Warrington, Cheshire. This was the first year in which the tournament was held as a ranking event. Television coverage was on ITV. Rex Williams made a total clearance of 143 in the seventh frame of his match against Tony Meo, but lost the match 3–5. Williams won the high break prize of £1,000. Steve Davis won his third Classic title beating fellow Londoner Tony Meo by 9–8. Meo led 4–2 before Davis won the last frame of the afternoon session with a break of 122 and then four more frames in a row in the evening to lead 7–4. Meo then won the next four frames to lead 8–7 before Davis levelled the match at 8–8 with a break of 84. 1983 Professional Players Tournament
The 1983 Professional Players Tournament was a professional ranking snooker tournament which took place between 3 September and 21 October 1983. In a change from the previous year, the event was hosted at one venue, the 600-seater Redwood Lodge in Bristol. The following year, it would be renamed as the Grand Prix. The event started on 10 October, the day after the finish of the International Open at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Cliff Thorburn, a finalist in the International Open, had to travel overnight to Bristol for his first match the following morning, but won against Vic Harris 5–1. World number one Steve Davis was beaten 5–2 at the last-32 stage by Mike Hallett. Willie Thorne reached his first major semi-final after beating Eugene Hughes 5–2 in the quarter-finals. The 1983 International Open (officially the 1983 Jameson International Open) was a professional ranking snooker tournament that took place between 1 and 9 October 1983 at the Eldon Square Recreation Centre in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. Steve Davis won the tournament, beating Cliff Thorburn 9–4 in the final. Television coverage was on ITV. Summary The defending champion Tony Knowles was defeated by John Spencer in the last 16 round. The 1983 World Snooker Championship (also known as the 1983 Embassy World Snooker Championship for the purposes of sponsorship) was a professional snooker tournament that took place between 16 April and 2 May 1983 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England. This was the third and final world ranking event of the 1982–83 snooker season following the 1982 Professional Players Tournament. Sixteen seeded players qualified directly for the event, with an additional sixteen players progressing through a two-round qualification round held at the Romiley Forum in Stockport, and Redwood Lodge in Bristol. The winner of the event received £30,000, and the tournament was sponsored by cigarette company Embassy. Alex Higgins was the defending champion, having won the 1982 championship, but he lost 5–16 to Steve Davis in the semi-finals. 1982 Professional Players Tournament
The 1982 Professional Players Tournament was a professional ranking snooker tournament that took place in two venues in the Birmingham area. One was at the La Reserve in Sutton Coldfield and the other was the International Snooker Club in Aston. It was the first tournament in a series which is now known as the World Open. The event was untelevised and unsponsored. Ray Reardon defeated Jimmy White 10–5 in the final, to win the first prize of £5,000 and his first ranking tournament win since the 1978 World Championship. Reardon became the oldest winner of a ranking event at the age of 50 years and 14 days. He remains the oldest winner of a ranking event. Six places in the 1983 Masters were allocated to the players, not already in the field, who advanced furthest in the event. 1982 International Open
The 1982 Jameson International Open was a professional ranking snooker tournament that took place between 27 September to 10 October 1982 at the Assembly Rooms in Derby, England. This was the first tournament outside of the World Snooker Championship to be given ranking status. Tony Knowles won the tournament, defeating David Taylor 9–6 in the final. Summary The WPBSA had been using a ranking system based on performances in the last three world championships. However they modified the system for the 1982–83 season to include the two open entry events in the ranking system. These were the Jameson International Open and the Professional Players Tournament which was held immediately afterwards.
