London Borough Of Merton
The London Borough of Merton () is a borough in Southwest London, England. The borough was formed under the London Government Act 1963 in 1965 by the merger of the Municipal Borough of Mitcham, the Municipal Borough of Wimbledon and the Merton and Morden Urban District, all formerly within Surrey. The main commercial centres in Merton are Mitcham, Morden and Wimbledon, of which Wimbledon is the largest. Other smaller centres include Raynes Park, Colliers Wood, South Wimbledon, Wimbledon Park and Tooting Broadway. The borough is the host of the Wimbledon tournament, one of tennis's Grand Slam competitions. The borough derives its name from the historic parish of Merton which was centred on the area now known as South Wimbledon. Merton was chosen as an acceptable compromise, following a dispute between Wimbledon and Mitcham over the new borough's name. Wimbledon College
Wimbledon College is a government-maintained, voluntary-aided, Jesuit Roman Catholic secondary school and sixth form for boys aged 11 to 19 in Wimbledon, London. The college was founded in 1892 "for improvement in living and learning for the greater glory of God and the common good." Wimbledon High School
Wimbledon High School is an independent girls' day school in Wimbledon, South West London. It is a Girls' Day School Trust school and is a member of the Girls' Schools Association. History Wimbledon High School was founded by the Girls' Public Day School Trust (now known as the Girls' Day School Trust or GDST). It opened on 9 November 1880 at No. 74 (now No. 78) Wimbledon Hill Road with 12 students and Miss Edith Hastings as Headmistress, aged just 29. Over the next decade, the school roll grew to over 200 girls. The first lesson taught was on the subject of the apple. Soon after, the fruit was used as the emblem of the school. The Norwegian School In London
The Norwegian School in London is an independent Norwegian international school in Wimbledon, London, England for children aged six to sixteen years. It was founded in January 1982. The school has two main divisions: a Primary School for pupils aged six to twelve years, and a Lower Secondary School for pupils aged twelve to sixteen, all together incorporating grades 1 through 10. Hall School Wimbledon (HSW) is a co-educational non-selective independent school in Wimbledon, London, for children aged 5 to 18, with plans to introduce a Sixth Form in September 2022. The school was founded in 1990, by former Headmaster Timothy Hobbs, with only nine pupils. As of August 2020, the school has approximately 150+ pupils. It was situated in Putney, London, to cater for the boys of the growing middle class population of the area. The school's main purpose was to prepare pupils for public school entrance exams, with a number gaining scholarships, the first in 1888 to Francis Whipple for attendance at Merchant Taylors' School. Many scholarships for academic, sport, music and art are still awarded to students.
