Great Lever
Great Lever is a suburb of Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. Historically in Lancashire, it is south of Bolton town centre and the same distance north of Farnworth. The district is served by frequent buses running to Bolton town centre, Farnworth and the Royal Bolton Hospital. The population is 16,969. Religion The parish church of St. Michael (with St Bartholomew) is a Grade 2 listed building. Landmarks On Green Lane there is one large public house: Southfield's, a pub and restaurant and The Brooklyn (now a private school). Both were houses built for local mill owners. Beehive Mill (now demolished) on Crescent Road. On the opposite side of Green Lane from the park are the grounds of Bolton Cricket Club. The two conjoined Doe Hey Reservoirs are used for private fishing. Will Hill Brook, which drains into the Doe Hey Reservoirs, forms the southern boundary between Great Lever and Farnworth. Ringley
Ringley is near Kearsley in Greater Manchester, England, on the east bank of the River Irwell. Its Anglican church is St Saviour's. Ringley is linked by road to Stoneclough by the A667 road which crosses the River Irwell on Ringley road bridge which is a short distance upstream from the 17th century Ringley Old Bridge. Ringley Old Bridge Ringley is connected to Stoneclough across the River Irwell by Ringley Old Bridge which dates from the 17th century. Nowadays it is only in use for pedestrians and cyclists. Very close to the Ringley side of the bridge are the ancient village stocks. The bridge is a Grade II listed building. St Saviour's Church St Saviour's Church stands close to the old bridge. Smithills is a mainly residential suburb of Bolton in Greater Manchester, England. It is northwest of Bolton, south of Blackburn and northwest of Manchester. Smithills lies on the lower south facing slopes of the West Pennine Moors. Toponymy The name Smithills derives from the Old English ''smeþe'' meaning smooth and ''hyll'', a hill and was recorded as Smythell in 1322. History Lying within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire since the early 12th century, Smithills was anciently a manor in the township of Halliwell with Smithills Hall serving as the manor house. In 1877, the south-eastern area of Halliwell became the ninth electoral ward of the County Borough of Bolton. Bradshaw is a village of the unparished area of South Turton in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton in Greater Manchester, England. It gives its name to the larger Bradshaw electoral ward, which includes Harwood. Historically a part of Lancashire, Bradshaw lies on the southern edge of the West Pennine Moors. Over Hulton
Over Hulton is a suburb of Westhoughton within the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, in Greater Manchester, England. Historically part of Lancashire, it lies south west of Bolton. History The ancient district of Hulton, contained three townships, Over Hulton, Middle Hulton and Little Hulton, it was recorded as Helghtun and Hulton in 1235, Hilton in 1278 and 1292, Hulton in 1292 although Hilton was still used until the 17th century. The chief manor was held by the Hultons at Hulton Park in Over Hulton. The earliest recorded Hultons were Iorweth and Madoc who came from Wales in 1167. It is possible they were joining family who were in the township from 989. Richard de Hulton, is recorded as having freehold of lands in the districts of Hulton, Ordsall, Flixton and Heaton in 1304. Prestolee
Prestolee is a small village in Kearsley, within the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, in Greater Manchester, England. It lies on the River Irwell and is one of a cluster of villages between Bolton and Kearsley, which includes Stoneclough and Ringley. Historically part of Lancashire, during the Middle Ages, Prestolee was a chapelry within the ancient ecclesiastical parish of Prestwich-cum-Oldham. Prestolee is surrounded almost completely by water and is effectively an island, with the River Irwell to the north, west and south and the Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal to the northeast. There is one road (Bridge Street) that provides vehicle access over the River Irwell. Prestolee Road also allows access to the village via a small canal bridge but the road is not metalled and not practical for most vehicles. Kearsley ( ) is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. The population at the 2011 census was 14,212. Historically part of Lancashire, it lies northwest of Manchester, southwest of Bury and south of Bolton. Astley Bridge
Astley Bridge is predominantly a residential district of Bolton in Greater Manchester, England. It is north of Bolton town centre, south of Blackburn, and northwest of Manchester. History Astley Bridge is quite a modern place name and only came into general use during the second half of the 19th century. It now refers to the large district in the modern Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, but prior to then it simply meant the bridge over Astley Brook which ran through the lower end of the township of Sharples. A Local Board of Health for Astley Bridge was constituted in 1864. The District comprised the higher (or detached) portion of Little Bolton and the lower portion of Sharples.
