2010 Rinkeby Riots
On June 8 and June 9, 2010, youth riots broke out in Rinkeby, a suburb dominated by Muslim immigrant residents, in northern Stockholm, Sweden. Up to 100 Muslim youths threw bricks, set fires and attacked the local police station in Rinkeby. It was among the earliest urban riots by Muslim immigrant youth in Sweden. Rioting The riot broke out late on the evening of 8 June, when a group of young adults were refused admittance to a junior high school dance; angered, they responded by throwing rocks through the windows of the school. From there, the rioting spread. Rioting continued for two nights. Police estimate that about 100 young men participated in the rioting, throwing bricks, setting fires and attacking the police station. 2022 Sweden Riots
Riots occurred in several Swedish cities in April 2022, primarily against police who were stationed to protect events planned by Danish provocateur Rasmus Paludan. The motivation for the violence was ostensibly Paludan's plan to burn a Quran; however, the police suspect that the event was used by criminal groups to target police. Two-thirds of those injured were police officers. Background Rasmus Paludan is a Danish-Swedish politician and head of the Hard Line party, who has been known for staging similarly provocative events in the past. His views have been characterized as anti-Islamic, and he has called for the deportation of Muslims from Western society. 2020 Sweden Riots
On 29 August 2020, riots broke out in the Swedish cities of Malmö and Ronneby. After Swedish police prevented Rasmus Paludan, a Danish politician, from entering the country, far-right anti-immigration activists held protests and burned the Quran. In response, a mob of 300 people gathered in counter-protest, burned tires, threw rocks and chunks of concrete at the police, and smashed bus shelters, and witnesses heard shouts of " Allāhu ʾakbar" and "La ilaha ilallah". A prominent Malmö imam responded "Those who are acting in this way have nothing to do with Islam." 2017 Rinkeby Riots
__NOTOC__ On 20 February 2017, rioting broke out in Rinkeby, a predominantly Immigration to Sweden, immigrant-populated suburb of the Swedish capital Stockholm. Rinkeby was previously the site of riots in 2010 Rinkeby riots, 2010 and May 2013 Stockholm riots, 2013. Events Rioting broke out in the evenings between Monday, 20 February - Thursday, 23 February, with a crowd of 25 to 30 masked men who assembled after a drug-related arrest near the Metro station. 2016 Riots In Sweden
On 15 May 2016, unrest occurred simultaneously in the Swedish towns of Norrköping and Borlänge, primarily in Million Programme Muslim-dominated public housing-areas, with stone-throwing against police and firefighters, car fires and arson attacks. The unrest took place across Sweden since late March. Public transportation was temporarily suspended in several areas due to stone-throwing against trams and buses. These incidents were mainly perpetrated by Muslim youths. These incidents were considered particularly notable as they represented the spread of unrest to outside the three major urban areas of Sweden. December 2013 Stockholm Riots
On 15 December 2013, violent clashes took place during an anti-racist demonstration in the Kärrtorp district of Stockholm, Sweden. The demonstration was organised by ''Linje 17'', its name referring to the Stockholm Metro Line 17 that runs through Kärrtorp. The demonstration was violently attacked by neo-Nazis. Two demonstrators and two police officers were injured and hospitalised. Events Amid increasing racist activity in Kärrtorp including racist graffiti on a local school, the newly created ''Linje 17'' organised a demonstration against this. May 2013 Stockholm Riots
On 19 May 2013, violent disturbances broke out in Husby, a suburb dominated by immigrants and second-generation immigrant residents, including a substantial number from Somalia, Eritrea, Afghanistan and Iraq, in northern Stockholm, Sweden. The riots were reportedly in response to the shooting to death by police of an elderly man, reportedly a Portuguese expatriate, armed with a puukko knife, after entering his apartment and then allegedly trying to cover up the man's death. The Husby political group Megafonen published a blog post on 14 May, the day after the shooting, in which the deceased man was referred to as "non-white". Megafonen also called for a demonstration against " police brutality" on 15 May, two days after the shooting, in the same post. The 2009 Malmö Davis Cup riots were anti-Israel riots in the Swedish city of Malmö against a Davis Cup tennis match 2009 Davis Cup World Group#Sweden vs. Israel, between Sweden and Israel on 7 March 2009. The riot took place when a group of burgher men, among them Ebel, was insulted by a royal guardsman and was given the sympathy by a crowd of people, who accompanied them to the police and then to the Royal Palace to complain and demand action, while a speech was made by Ebel, before the crowd was dissolved by the military. 2008 Malmö Mosque Riots
On December 18 and 20, 2008, the closure of an Islamic cultural centre that housed a mosque in the Herrgården neighborhood of the Malmö district of Rosengård, in southern Sweden, caused hundreds of youths to riot against police. The riot, thought to have been the first of several 21st century youth riots in Sweden, was described by police at the time as "most violent riots we had ever encountered." The Stockholm riots (1623) were a series of unrests in Stockholm, 1623 as response to the high taxes and conscription by the Swedish Government. Background Reason behind the riots After a truce in 1623 with Poland–Lithuania during the Polish–Swedish War (1621–1625), Gustavus Adolphus, the king of Sweden, began new recruitment, despite the truce. He was afraid that the peace would not be kept. Many soldiers were lost before they were sent over to the frontlines. Gustavus had also implemented new taxes, which further expanded unrest.
