This article lists political parties in Samoa. , Samoa has six officially recognized political parties, the ruling Fa'atuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) party, the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP), the Tautua Samoa Party, the Samoa First Party, and the Samoa National Democratic Party. In May 2020 a fifth party, the ''Tumua ma Puleono'', registered for the elections, and in July 2020, the Fa'atuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi did as well to challenge the longstanding HRPP, which had been in power since 1982. Despite political parties being present in the country, ideologies and manifestos remain relatively fluid, with local connections and matai holding great/more influence in convincing voters to support a particular candidate over party affiliation in many circumstances. Samoa Party
The Samoa Party was a small party of Samoa. The party was founded in September 2005 by former auditor-general Su'a Rimoni Ah Chong on a platform of restoring the independence of watchdog institutions such as the Auditor-General. The party also aimed to provide free education, and impose a term limit on future Prime Ministers of two terms. During the 2006 Samoan general election, it did not secure any seats. The party was disbanded in September 2010 and merged with the Tautua Samoa Party. Politics of Samoa takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic state whereby the Prime Minister of Samoa is the head of government. Existing alongside the country's Western-styled political system is the '' fa'amatai'' chiefly system of socio-political governance and organisation, central to understanding Samoa's political system. From the country's independence in 1962, only ''matai'' could vote and stand as candidates in elections to parliament. In 1990, the voting system was changed by the Electoral Amendment Act which introduced universal suffrage. However, the right to stand for elections remains with ''matai'' title holders. Therefore, in the 51-seat parliament, all 49 ''Samoan'' Members of Parliament are also ''matai'', performing dual roles as chiefs and modern politicians, with the exception of the two seats reserved for non-Samoans.
