Ankara ( , ; ), historically known as Ancyra and Angora, is the capital of Turkey. Located in the central part of Anatolia, the city has a population of 5.1 million in its urban center and over 5.7 million in Ankara Province, making it Turkey's second-largest city after Istanbul. Serving as the capital of the ancient Celtic state of Galatia (280–64 BC), and later of the Roman province with the same name (25 BC–7th century), the city is very old, with various Hattian, Hittite, Lydian, Phrygian, Galatian, Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman archeological sites. Vehbi Koç
Ahmet Vehbi Koç (20 July 1901 – 25 February 1996) was a Turkish entrepreneur and philanthropist who founded the Koç Holding, Koç Group, one of Turkey’s largest groups of companies. During his lifetime he came to be one of Turkey's wealthiest citizens. He was also a well-known philanthropist with interests in health, education and the arts. Early life Vehbi Koç was born in 1901 in Çorakalı, a predominantly Muslim neighbourhood of Ankara. He then lived in a vineyard estate in the Keçiören district, since absorbed into Ankara. Purchased by his father in 1923, the property, which was left vacant after the Kasapyan family moved to Istanbul from Ankara during the Armenian Genocide, was later acquired by Koç and became the Vehbi Koç museum in 1944 after a thorough renovation. Orhan Karaveli (25 February 1930 – 24 March 2023) was a Turkish journalist and writer. Personal life Orhan Karaveli's family was a member of the Karaevli Turkmen tribe. Their surname reflects their tribe name with a transposition of two letters. Orhan Karaveli was born to Mahmut and his wife Rafia in Ankara on 26 February 1930. He attended İstiklal Primary School in 1936. But the next year he was transferred to Galatasaray Primary School in Istanbul. He continued his secondary education at Galatasaray High School util 1949. Erdal İnönü (6 June 1926 – 31 October 2007) was a Turkish theoretical physicist and politician, who served as the interim Prime Minister of Turkey between 16 May and 25 June 1993. He also served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey from 1991 to 1993 and as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from March to October 1995. He served as the leader of the Social Democracy Party (SODEP) from 1983 to 1985 and later the Social Democratic Populist Party (SHP) from 1986 to 1993. Can Dündar (, born 16 June 1961) is a Turkish journalist, columnist and documentarian. Editor-in-chief of center-left ''Cumhuriyet'' newspaper until August 2016, he was arrested in November 2015 after his newspaper published footage showing the State Intelligence MİT sending weapons to Syrian Islamist fighters. Cansu Dere (born 14 October 1980, Ankara) is a Turkish actress, model and former Miss Turkey. Biography Her mother is originally from Thessaloniki, Greece, while her father is originally from the Bulgaria. She completed her primary and secondary education in İzmir. In 2000, she was due to represent Turkey in the Miss Universe pageant but, Cansu withdrew due to political issues between Turkey and Cyprus (Host country of the Miss Universe in 2000); Turkey had no relations with the Republic of Cyprus. Ordal Demokan (January 13, 1946 – October 29, 2004) was a Turkish physicist. Biography Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Demokan graduated from TED Ankara Koleji in 1962, and received his BSc and MSc degrees on Electrical Engineering in 1966 and 1967 from Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara. He received TUBITAK scholarship between 1964 and 1967. He received his PhD degree on physics from University of Iowa in 1970, through Fulbright scholarship between 1967 and 1969 and University of Iowa Education Scholarship. Vedat Dalokay (10 November 1927 – 21 March 1991) was a renowned Turkish architect and a former mayor of Ankara. Early life and education He was born in Elazığ in 1927 to İbrahim Bey from Pertek. Yasemin Dalkılıç (born 2 May 1979) is a Turkish female free diver. She holds numerous records in different categories of free diving. Though still in the middle of her career, she is already considered to be one of the all-time greats in the sport. Biography Yasemin Dalkılıç was born and grew up in Ankara, Turkey, some away from the nearest coast. At age 14, she was a member of the national monofin finswimming team, where she stayed for several years and set several Turkish records. By the time she was 16, she had established herself as the best freediver in her country.
