This is a list of areas and neighbourhoods in Chennai by region. The city is divided on the basis of composition into four major parts: North, Central, South and West. North Chennai is primarily an industrial area while some areas are residential. Central Chennai is the commercial heart of the city and the downtown area. Sowcarpet is a neighborhood in the northern part of Chennai, India. Sowcarpet is one of the oldest neighborhoods of the city with narrow streets and vintage buildings. It is a bustling commercial area of the city, and a range of wholesale markets are located here. Maaththoor ( ta, மாத்தூர்) formerly known as Mathur is a residential area located north of Chennai, a metropolitan city in Tamil Nadu, India.
