Gozo
Gozo (, ), Maltese: ''Għawdex'' () and in antiquity known as Gaulos ( xpu, 𐤂𐤅𐤋, ; grc, Γαῦλος, Gaúlos), is an island in the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. The island is part of the Republic of Malta. After the island of Malta itself, it is the second-largest island in the archipelago. As of 2021, the island has a population of around 31,232 (out of Malta's total 443,227), and its inhabitants are known as Gozitans ( mt, Għawdxin). It is rich in historic locations such as the Ġgantija temples, which, along with the other Megalithic Temples of Malta, are amongst the world's oldest free-standing structures. National Inventory Of The Cultural Property Of The Maltese Islands
The National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands (NICPMI) is a heritage register listing the cultural property of Malta. The inventory includes properties such as archaeological sites, fortifications, religious buildings, monuments and other buildings. The NICPMI is under the responsibility of the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage (SCH), which was founded in 2002 to replace the Antiquities Act. The NICPMI was established on 16 December 2011. Cittadella (Gozo)
The Cittadella ( mt, Iċ-Ċittadella), also known as the Castello ( mt, Il-Kastell), is the citadel of Victoria on the island of Gozo, Malta. The area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, and the site now occupied by the Cittadella is believed to have been the acropolis of the Punic-Roman city of ''Gaulos'' or ''Glauconis Civitas''. During the medieval period, the acropolis was converted into a castle which served as a refuge for Gozo's population. A suburb began to develop outside its walls by the 15th century, and this area now forms the historic core of Victoria. The castle's defences were obsolete by the 16th century, and in 1551 an Ottoman force invaded Gozo and sacked the Cittadella. A major reconstruction of the southern walls of the Cittadella was undertaken between 1599 and 1622, transforming it into a gunpowder fortress. Church Of St Francis, Victoria Gozo
The Church of St Francis is a Roman Catholic church building in Victoria, Gozo, Malta, situated in St Francis Square. Adjacent to the church is the convent of the Conventual Franciscans. History The original convent and church of St Francis date back to 1492. The original church was dedicated to St Mark. The name was changed in 1535 to that of St Francis. The present church and convent were mostly built in the 17th century. The church was completed in 1663. Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena visited the convent and church in 1742. He stayed there from 5 June till 9 June to take possession of the island. This event was commemorated by an inscription on the wall of the rooms he occupied during this visit. In December 1890 the church was closed to the public by order of the government as it was seen to be unfit for use. The ceiling of the church was in a very dangerous state. Our Lady Of Pompei Church, Victoria, Gozo
The Church of Our Lady of Pompei is a Roman Catholic, Dominican church in Victoria, Gozo, Malta. History The church was built to serve the Dominican sisters whose monastery they have adjacent to the church. The monastery was built in 1889. The church was opened to the public on 25 July 1900 and consecrated on July 1, 1923 by Bishop Angelo Portelli, the Auxiliary Bishop of Malta. The titular painting depicting Our Lady of Pompei is the work of Lazzaro Pisani. Bishop Giuseppe Pace crowned the Virgin of Pompei on October 16, 1966. Prior to 2009 a statue of Our lady of Pompei stood on top of the dome of the church. In 2009 it was destroyed by strong winds that lashed through the island. The Church of St Augustine is a Roman Catholic church building in Victoria, Gozo, Malta, situated in St Augustine's Square. The church is part of the Augustinian monastery situated on its left side. Origins The order of St Augustine is the oldest religious order in Gozo. Probably the Augustinian order in Gozo was the first such order to establish permanent residence in Malta. Before establishing themselves in Victoria the order lived in Xagħra near a small church dedicated to Our Lady of the Seven Joys. The earliest mention of the Victoria monastery and church date to 1435 but some researchers claim that the monastery already existed in 1260. In October 1652 Pope Innocent X ordered the monastery and church to be closed but they were reopened after 4 months through the intervention of Grand Master Giovanni Paolo Lascaris. The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven ( mt, Katidral ta' Santa Marija Assunta) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the Cittadella of Victoria in Gozo, Malta. The cathedral is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, and it has been the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gozo since the formation of the diocese in 1864. History The Cittadella was initially a pre-historic settlement and later a Roman temple dedicated to Juno was developed, and the remains of this temple existed until the present day as part of the cathedral. Following the Christianization of Malta and Gozo, the temple was converted into a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Church of the Nativity of Our Lady more commonly known in Maltese as ''Ta' Savina'' is a church situated in the heart of Victoria, Gozo, Victoria, in the island of Gozo, part of the Maltese archipelago. Church Of St James, Victoria Gozo
The Church of St James is a Roman Catholic church building in Victoria, Gozo, Malta, situated in Independence Square, the centre of the town. History The present church dates from the 20th century but part of the church, particularly the sanctuary, dates to the 18th century. The original building was used as a parochial church for the eastern part of the island of Gozo during the night hours at a time when the only parishes on the island were those of St George and the Collegiate of the Assumption, the present cathedral. Two other chapels were adjoined to the original church, one dedicated to the Holy Cross and the other to St Mark. This is recorded in inquisitor Pietro Dusina's 1575 report. Following the 1551 corsair raid on Gozo led by Sinam Baxa the church suffered extensive damage and had to be rebuilt. Annunciation Chapel, Victoria
The Chapel of the Annunciation or the Lunzjata Chapel is a small Roman Catholic church built into a cave located in the valley known as the Lunzjata Valley in Victoria, Gozo, Malta. History The original chapel of the Annunciation goes back to at least 1347. Documents from the 14th century reveal that the church was a Jus patronatus founded by Dona Sibila of Aragon. When she died the Jus patronatus passed to the kings of Sicily, who at that time ruled Malta. On November 12, 1372 the chapel was handed over to a Maltese priest Don Bartolommeo Asciach who was probably its second rector. Up until the Knights Hospitaller arrived in Malta in 1530 the chapel was mostly administered by the nobility of Aragon and Sicily. When the knights came they took over and appointed Don Pietro Burlo as its rector. The chapel was rebuilt in 1629 by its rector Don Paolo Tabone.
