This is a list of mayors of Ponce, Puerto Rico's southern economic center, the island's second largest and second most important city. From 1692 to 1840, the office of mayor in Ponce was filled either by local hacendados or by military officers appointed by the governor, depending on whether the political situation on Spain at the time was that of a constitutional or an absolutist government. From 1840 to 1870, mayors were oftentimes elected by the municipal council, whose members were called ''regidores''. In 1870, political parties were created for the first time and municipal officials were elected by the people at large, and the mayor, as well as the members of the municipal council, would belong to one of the two parties active, either the Partido Liberal Reformista or the Partido Incondicional Español. Luis Irizarry Pabón
Luis Manuel Irizarry Pabón (b. Ponce, Puerto Rico; 12 November 1958) is the current mayor of the municipality of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Biography Luis Manuel Irizarry Pabón was born on 12 November 1958 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. His parents were Félix Irizarry and Carmen Lydia Pabón. A graduate of the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, Irizarry Pabón was an internal medicine physician prior to becoming Ponce's mayor-elect in November 2020. He was also a municipal legislator in the Ponce Municipal Legislature for 12 years (2009 to 2021), and minority leader in said legislative body. Alejandro Ordóñez
Alejandro Ordóñez (c. 1766 – c. 1836) was Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, from 3 January 1816 to 31 December 1818. He was a ''teniente justicia mayor'' (justice major lieutenant). Background Ordóñez was a Spanish subject who had arrived to Puerto Rico from Venezuela with his family, plenty of cash, and merchandise and slaves. He was educated, knowledgeable on matters of business and agriculture, and with plans to grow a prosperous business. He arrived in Puerto Rico on 1815 as a ''Comandante Militar y Político'' (Military Commander and Politician) and was immediately named ''Subdelegado Real de Hacienda'' and ''Teniente de Justicia Mayor'' in Coamo. Two years later, in 1817, he became Alcalde Ordinario in Ponce. As of 1 January 1816, heads of civil government in Ponce that up to that time were titled ''"teniente a guerra"'', began to be titled ''"justicia mayor"''. José De Toro
José de Toro was Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, in two occasions: 1814 and in 1820 (starting on 3 June 1820). In 1814, he performed as a ''teniente a guerra'' mayor, while from 3 June 1820 until later that year he performed as Alcalde ordinario. First mayoral term (1814) In 1814, while José de Toro was mayor of Ponce and his secretary was Jose Inchausty, a cemetery was built at the (then) end of Calle Unión. At the time calle Union had no houses and the lands were part of Hacienda Molina. José Benítez (mayor)
José Benítez (c. 1760 – 1832) was mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1800. He is best remembered for the creation of the Fuerte de San José in 1760 in Playa de Ponce. The fort was in operation until the 1890s. Background Benítez is best remembered as the military commander who led a group of urban militiamen from Ponce in their defense of San Juan during the British invasion of 1797. Family life Benítez married Juana Constanza Batista Rodríguez, and was the father of María Bibiana Benítez, considered the first Puerto Rican female poet. Francisco Ortiz de la Renta (c. 1726 – c. 1806) was a Teniente a guerra Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, from 1 January 1766 to 31 December 1800, when José Benítez took over the mayoral administration. Joseph De Toro
Joseph de Toro was mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, starting in 1710. Background De Toro was ''capitán de granaderos'' (herdsmen captain), a governmental position, during the 1812 mayoral administration of Jose Ortiz de la Renta. Mayoral term Eduardo Neumann Gandia states that Joseph de Toro was mayor of Ponce starting in 1710. It is not known with certainty, however, when De Toro ended his mayoral term. Rafael Cordero Santiago
Rafael Cordero Santiago (24 October 1942 – 17 January 2004), better known as "Churumba", was the Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, Ponce, Puerto Rico, from 1989 to 2004.
