List Of Mayors Of Pensacola, Florida
This is a list of mayors of Pensacola, Florida. The mayor is the chief executive of the Pensacola city government. This list is from 1820 through present day, and includes Spanish, Confederate and United States mayors. In 1878, Salvador T. Pons, the first African–American mayor of Pensacola, was elected. In 1885, the city's charter was revoked by governor Edward A. Perry, replacing it with a state-appointed government. In 1895, a new city charter was passed by the Florida Legislature, replacing Perry's Provisional Municipality of Pensacola with a new charter, which stated that Pensacolians could elect their own mayor and aldermen. In 1931, the city government was changed to a council–manager government, which it had until 2009, when voters approved a new mayor–council charter. Worldwide, there is a wide variance in local laws and customs regarding the powers and responsibilities of a mayor as well as the means by which a mayor is elected or otherwise mandated. Salvador Pons
Salvador T. Pons (December 23, 1835 - March 21, 1890) was a bricklayer and politician in Pensacola, Florida. He served in the Florida House of Representatives for Escambia County from 1868-1870 and in 1875. He served as Pensacola's mayor in 1874 and was on the city council in 1869, 1870 and 1874. He was a clerk for Pensacola from 1877-1880 and from 1882-1884. He was described as small in stature and was praised by Stephen R. Mallory.Florida's Black Public Officials by Carter Brown Jr. page 116 He attended the Convention of Colored People in Nashville in 1876. He was born in Mexico. His father was a White seaman and his mother Maria Rosario had African ancestry. He was described as Creole and "mulatto". He caught Yellow Fever in 1882. Samuel Leonard (ca 1755 – August 20, 1825) was a United Empire Loyalist and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Horton Township from 1793 to 1799 in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. A government in exile (abbreviated as GiE) is a political group that claims to be a country or semi-sovereign state's legitimate government, but is unable to exercise legal power and instead resides in a foreign country. Governments in exile usually plan to one day return to their native country and regain formal power. A government in exile differs from a rump state in the sense that a rump state controls at least part of its former territory. For example, during World War I, nearly all of Belgium was occupied by Germany, but Belgium and its allies held on to a small slice in the country's west.
