The Mayor of Luxembourg City is the mayor of Luxembourg's capital and largest city, Luxembourg City. The officeholder, like other mayors in Luxembourg, is appointed by the Grand Duke amongst council members. Due to the city's importance within the country (being home to almost one in six Luxembourgers), the position as Mayor of Luxembourg City is one of the highest and most prestigious positions in Luxembourgian government and politics. Mayor
In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Worldwide, there is a wide variance in local laws and customs regarding the powers and responsibilities of a mayor as well as the means by which a mayor is elected or otherwise mandated. Depending on the system chosen, a mayor may be the chief executive officer of the municipal government, may simply chair a multi-member governing body with little or no independent power, or may play a solely ceremonial role. Gaston Diderich
Gaston Diderich (18 June 1884 – 29 April 1946) was a Luxembourgish politician and jurist. He was the Mayor of Luxembourg City from 1921 until his death in 1946, making his the longest uninterrupted tenure in the city's history. In addition, Diderich was a member of the Chamber of Deputies from 1918 until 1940, and again from 1945 until his death the following year. Diderich started political life in the Liberal League, of which he was on the progressive wing. After the German occupation during the First World War, the Liberal League found itself in opposition for the first time and suffered ideological divisions. Jean-Pierre Alphonse Munchen (3 September 1850 – 25 January 1917) was a Luxembourgish engineer and politician. He served as the Mayor of Luxembourg City between 24 July 1904 and 14 February 1915. Dominique Alexis Brasseur-Brasseur (14 June 1833 – 17 October 1906) was a Luxembourgian politician and jurist. He served as Mayor of Luxembourg City between 1891 and 1894. Emmanuel Servais
Lambert Joseph Emmanuel Servais (11 April 1811 – 17 June 1890) was a Luxembourg politician. He held numerous offices of national importance, foremost amongst which was in serving as the fifth Prime Minister of Luxembourg, for seven years, from 3 December 1867 until 26 December 1874. After being Prime Minister, he was a long-serving Mayor of Luxembourg City, holding office from soon after his departure from the premiership, in 1875, until his death, in 1890. Servais was also successively President of the Council of State (1874–1887) and President of the Chamber of Deputies (1887–1890). No other person has held even three of these four positions. Charles Simonis
Charles Mathias Édouard Simonis (21 September 1818 – 1 November 1875) was a Luxembourgian politician and jurist. Simonis was Mayor of Luxembourg City from 1873 until his premature death, in 1875. He also sat in the Chamber of Deputies. In the Chamber, he was notable for his leadership of the campaign against the creation of a National Bank, which he maintained until his death. Théodore Eberhard (29 August 1812 – 12 May 1874) was a Luxembourgish architect and politician. Biography Eberhard was born in Luxembourg City. He was a member of the Chamber of Deputies from 1851 to 1854 and of the ''Assemblée des États'' from 1857 to 1866. He served as an '' échevin'' of Luxembourg City from 1850 to 1854 and from 1859 to 1865, then as mayor of the city between 1865 and 1869.
