This covers the Ottoman Empire to the modern day; the name of the city in English is Constantinople during the Ottoman period and in the Republican era until 1930. Ekrem İmamoğlu
Ekrem İmamoğlu (; born 4 June 1970) is a Turkish businessman, real estate developer, and politician serving as the 32nd Mayor of Istanbul. He was first elected with 4.1 million votes and won with a margin of 13,000 votes against his AKP opponent in the March 2019 mayoral election as the joint Nation Alliance candidate of the Republican People's Party (CHP) and the Good Party, but served only from 17 April 2019 until 6 May 2019, when the election was annulled. He was then reelected in a renewed election on 23 June 2019 by an even larger margin of 800,000 votes. He had previously been the Mayor of Beylikdüzü, a western district of Istanbul, between 2014 and 2019. Necdet Uğur
Necdet Uğur (full name Mustafa Necdet Uğur) (1 January 1923 – 27 September 2004) was a politician in Turkey Early life and education He was born in 1923 in Mecitözü ilçe (district) of Çorum Province. In 1944 he graduated from the Faculty of Political Science, of Ankara University. He served as chief security director of several Turkish Provinces including İstanbul and İzmir. Before the 1963 Turkish local elections he was appointed as the İstanbul mayor to serve up to the election date. However he did not run for the office in the elections. Nurettin Sözen
Nurettin Sözen (born 1937 in Gürün) is a Turkish doctor, politician and the former mayor of Istanbul, Turkey. He graduated from Istanbul University and then became a professor in 1978. He was elected as the mayor of Istanbul on March 28, 1989 while he was a member of SHP. He stayed in the office until March 27, 1994. He didn't take any active political missions until he was elected as the deputy of Sivas, his homeland, in 2002. Motherland Party (Turkey)
The Motherland Party ( tr, Anavatan Partisi, abbreviated as ANAVATAN, formerly ANAP) is a political party in Turkey. It was founded in 1983 by Turgut Özal. It merged with the Democratic Party in October 2009, but in the September of 2011 the party was re-established again. Its current president is İbrahim Çelebi. The ANAP was considered a centre-right neoliberal, conservative and nationalist party that supported restrictions on the role that government can play in the economy and also supported private capital and enterprise and some public expressions of religion. Bedrettin Dalan
Bedrettin Dalan (born 18 July 1941) is a Turkish engineer, former politician and the first mayor of Greater Istanbul. He is the founder of ''İSTEK Vakfı'', a foundation for education and culture, and Yeditepe University in Istanbul. He was charged in the Ergenekon trials, and was the subject of an Interpol red notice. In late 2011 Germany declined a request to extradite Dalan. Prosecutors claimed that Dalan was the organization's "number three", and was one of the architects of the 1997 post-modern coup. 1980 Turkish Coup D'état
The 1980 Turkish coup d'état ( tr, 12 Eylül Darbesi), headed by Chief of the General Staff General Kenan Evren, was the third coup d'état in the history of the Republic of Turkey, the previous having been the 1960 coup and the 1971 coup by memorandum. During the Cold War era, Turkey saw political violence (1976–1980) between far-left, far-right (Grey Wolves), Islamist militant groups, and the state. The violence saw a sharp downturn for a period after the coup, which was welcomed by some for restoring order by quickly executing 50 people and arresting 500,000 of which hundreds would die in prison. Aytekin Kotil
Aytekin Kotil (1934–1992) was a Turkish social democratic politician. He was the mayor of Istanbul being a pioneer in the municipal socialism in Turkey. He was also a member of the Turkish Parliament. Early life and education Kotil was born in Gündoğdu, Rize, on 21 February 1934. He had three brothers. He was a graduate of Vefa High School, Istanbul. He received a degree in law from the law faculty of Istanbul University in 1960. Career Following his graduation Kotil worked as a lawyer in Istanbul. He joined the Republican People's Party (CHP) and became active in the CHP's Istanbul organization. He was part of a faction consisted of those party members from the Black Sea region. Ahmet İsvan
Ahmet İsvan (1923–2017) was a leftist Turkish politician. He served as the mayor of Istanbul between 1973 and 1977. He was among the pioneers of the municipal socialism in Turkey. Early life and education İsvan was born in Istanbul in 1923. His father was a bureaucrat working in the state-owned Sümerbank. He was a graduate of Robert College where he first met Bülent Ecevit, future leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP). İsvan, Bülent Ecevit and his wife Rahşan were all 1944 graduates of Robert College. İsvan studied agronomy in the USA. Career İsvan bought a farm in Taşköprü, Yalova, after his studies.
