The City of Bunbury is a local government area in the South West region of Western Australia, covering an area of along the coast about south of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. The City of Bunbury is one of four local governments comprising the Greater Bunbury sub-region. As at the 2016 Census, the City of Bunbury had an estimated population of almost 32,000. History The Municipality of Bunbury was established on 21 February 1871. It absorbed part of the abolished Bunbury Road District, which had surrounded the municipality, on 20 January 1950, leading to the formation of a new Suburban Ward. It gained town status on 1 July 1961, becoming the Town of Bunbury, and assumed its current name when it was granted city status on 8 October 1979. Wards The town has 12 councillors and no wards. The Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria was celebrated on 20 and 21 June 1887 to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria's accession on 20 June 1837. Major General Sir Newton James Moore, (17 May 1870 – 28 October 1936) was an Australian politician, businessman and army officer. He served as the eighth Premier of Western Australia from 1906 to 1910 and, following service in the First World War, was a member of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1918 to 1932. He was the father of Sir Rodney Moore. Ephraim Mayo Clarke (21 August 1846 – 15 April 1921) was an Australian politician who was a member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1901 until his death, representing South-West Province. He was a minister in the second government of George Leake. Clarke was born in Australind, in Western Australia's South West region. He initially worked on his father's property at Australind, but later farmed at his own property, near Harvey. In 1874, Clarke moved to Bunbury, where he was a storekeeper and warehouse owner. He was eventually elected to the Bunbury Municipal Council, and served four periods as Mayor of Bunbury (in 1888, from 1894 to 1897, from 1899 to 1900, and in 1908). William Spencer (1824 – 21 July 1901) was an early settler of Western Australia. Arriving in Bunbury from England in 1842, he remained in the area for the rest of his life, serving several terms as the town's mayor. William Lemen Thomas (25 September 1872 – 13 July 1921) was an Australian politician who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1911 to 1917, representing the seat of Bunbury. He was a minister in the government of Henry Lefroy. Early life Thomas was born in Kilmore, Victoria, to Mary (née Browne) and James Thomas. He trained as a chemist in New South Wales, becoming a member of the state's Pharmaceutical Society. Ernest Cosmo Manea (23 December 1926 – 16 October 2013) was a prominent figure in the city of Bunbury, Western Australia. He was the mayor of Bunbury from 1966 to 1972 and again from 1988 to 1997, making him the city's longest-serving mayor.
