Augusta ( ), officially Augusta–Richmond County, is a consolidated city-county on the central eastern border of the U.S. state of Georgia. The city lies across the Savannah River from South Carolina at the head of its navigable portion. Georgia's third-largest city after Atlanta and Columbus, Augusta is located in the Fall Line section of the state. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Augusta–Richmond County had a 2020 population of 202,081, not counting the unconsolidated cities of Blythe and Hephzibah. It is the 116th largest city in the United States. The process of consolidation between the City of Augusta and Richmond County began with a 1995 referendum in the two jurisdictions. The merger was completed on July 1, 1996. Augusta is the principal city of the Augusta metropolitan area. In 2020 it had a population of 611,000, making it the second-largest metro area in the state. Willie Howard Mays Jr. (born May 6, 1931), nicknamed "the Say Hey Kid", is a former center fielder in Major League Baseball (MLB). Regarded as one of the greatest players ever, Mays ranks second behind only Babe Ruth on most all-time lists, including those of ''The Sporting News'' and ESPN. Mays played in the National League (NL) between 1951 and 1973 for the New York / San Francisco Giants and New York Mets. Born in Westfield, Alabama, Mays was an all-around athlete. WJBF (channel 6) is a television station in Augusta, Georgia, United States, affiliated with ABC and owned by Nexstar Media Group. The station's studios are located in Television Park, near the Augusta Mall in Augusta, and its transmitter is located in Beech Island, South Carolina. History WJBF-TV began operations on November 23, 1953 as Augusta's first television station. The station was founded by the Georgia-Carolina Broadcasting Company, the broadcasting arm of local entrepreneur J. B. Fuqua, who also owned NBC Radio Network affiliate WJBF (1230 AM). WJBF-TV was a primary NBC affiliate, but picked up programs from CBS, ABC and DuMont on a secondary basis. Sister station WJBF radio was sold by Fuqua in 1954 (it is now WEZO). Robert Wood Young (born September 3, 1947) is an American broadcast journalist, author, and politician who served as Mayor of Augusta, Georgia. Young also served a presidential appointment by George W. Bush on the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and at United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. Young later served as the President and CEO of the Southeastern Natural Sciences Academy. He is currently owner and CEO of Eagle Veterans Services and Squeaky Productions, both headquartered in Augusta. Ed McIntyre
Edward Marlow McIntyre Sr. (November 16, 1931 – August 14, 2004) became the first African American mayor of Augusta, Georgia, in 1981. He had previously served as a county commissioner for Richmond County since 1970, as the first black candidate to win the office. He is notable for a U.S. federal conviction for extortion in 1984. He later received a pardon and mounted three unsuccessful campaigns for the mayoralty, in 1990, 1998 and 2002. A graduate of Morehouse College, McIntyre worked for the Pilgrim Health Life Insurance Company before entering politics.
