Larry Sconyers
Larry E. Sconyers (born 1941) was the first Mayor of the consolidated government for Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia. He is also the owner of Sconyers Bar-B-Que, a top 10 restaurant in its class according to ''People'' magazine. The restaurant was officially commended by the Georgia General Assembly within House Resolution 1388. His parents, Claude and Adeline founded the Barbecue restaurant in 1956. Larry was invited to cater an event for United States President Jimmy Carter at the White House in 1980. Richmond County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 200,549. It is one of the original counties of Georgia, created February 5, 1777. Following an election in 1995, the city of Augusta (the county seat) consolidated governments with Richmond County. The consolidated entity is known as Augusta-Richmond County, or simply Augusta. Sconyers Bar-B-Que, also known as Sconyers Inc. is a southern food and barbecue restaurant located in Augusta, Georgia. It has received popular acclaim for its food, and was listed as a top ten barbecue restaurant in the United States by ''People'' magazine in 1989. History The restaurant began operations in 1956 when Claude and Adeline Sconyers opened a road side stand in the rural south side of Augusta. It has remained family owned and operated to this day, and is currently owned by Larry Sconyers, the youngest son of Claude and Adeline. It was his decision to move the restaurant to its current location and expand its operation to include catering services. Charles Whitlow Norwood Jr. (July 27, 1941 – February 13, 2007) was an American politician who served as a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from 1995 until his death in 2007. At the time of his death, Norwood was the representative of the 10th District of Georgia. Early life and education Born in Valdosta, Georgia, Norwood graduated from Baylor School, then a military academy, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He then attended Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
