List Of Marine Bony Fishes Of South Africa
This is a sublist of the List of marine fishes of South Africa for bony fishes recorded from the oceans bordering South Africa. This list comprises locally used common names, scientific names with author citation and recorded ranges. Ranges specified may not be the entire known range for the species, but should include the known range within the waters surrounding the Republic of South Africa. List ordering and taxonomy complies where possible with the current usage in Wikispecies, and may differ from the cited source, as listed citations are primarily for range or existence of records for the region. Sub-taxa within any given taxon are arranged alphabetically as a general rule. Details of each species may be available through the relevant internal links. Synonyms may be listed where useful. Superclass Osteichthyes – Bony fishes All entries in this list are included in this superclass. There are two classes represented: Actinopterygii and Sarcopterygii. Class Actinopt ...

Gilchristella Aestuaria
''Gilchristella aestuaria'', the Gilchrist's round herring or estuarine round-herring, is a member of the herring family Clupeidae that occurs off the coasts of Southern Africa. It is the only species in its genus, which was named for John Dow Fisher Gilchrist (1866–1926). Information There are no indications of major threats to this species. It is considered to be of least concern for becoming an endangered species. Size The average length of the ''G. aestuaria'' as an unsexed male is about ten centimeters. Habitat The ''Gilchristella aestuaria'' can be found in a marine environment and in freshwater. The habitat is located in subtropical climates. This species is primarily found in estuaries, lagoons, lakes, and rivers. It is considered an extremely important fish in estuaries of South Africa . This small sardine-like fish lives in large shoals and provides an important link in the food chain as a food source to larger fish and water birds. This fish does not survive ...

Etrumeus Teres
''Etrumeus sadina'', the red-eye round herring, is a species of fish belonging to the family Dussumieriidae, a family notable for their rounded bellies. Clupeidae
Clupeidae is a family of ray-finned fishes, comprising, for instance, the herrings, shads, sardines, hilsa, and menhadens. The clupeoids include many of the most important food fishes in the world, and are also commonly caught for production of fish oil and fish meal. Many members of the family have a body protected with shiny cycloid (very smooth and uniform) scales, a single dorsal fin, and a fusiform body for quick, evasive swimming and pursuit of prey composed of small planktonic animals. Due to their small size and position in the lower trophic level of many marine food webs, the levels of methylmercury they bioaccumulate are very low, reducing the risk of mercury poisoning when consumed. Description and biology Clupeids are mostly marine forage fish, although a few species are found in fresh water. No species has scales on the head, and some are entirely scaleless. The lateral line is short or absent, and the teeth are unusually small where they are present at all. Clupe ...
