Campbeltown (; gd, Ceann Loch Chille Chiarain or ) is a town and former royal burgh in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It lies by Campbeltown Loch on the Kintyre peninsula. Campbeltown became an important centre for Scotch whisky, and a busy fishing port. The 2018 population estimate was 4,600 indicating a reduction since the 2011 census. History Originally known as Kinlochkilkerran (an anglicization of the Gaelic, which means 'head of the loch by the kirk of Ciarán'), Campbeltown was renamed in the 17th century as ''Campbell's Town'' after Archibald Campbell (Earl of Argyle) was granted the site in 1667. Davaar Lighthouse
Island Davaar or Davaar Island ( gd, Eilean Dà Bhàrr) is located at the mouth of Campbeltown Loch off the east coast of Kintyre, in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It is a tidal island, linked to the mainland by a natural shingle causeway called the Dhorlin near Campbeltown at low tide. The crossing can be made in around 40 minutes. History Davaar was known as the island of Sanct Barre between the years 1449 to 1508. The modern form ''Davaar'' is from older Do Bharre – thy St Barre. Dr Gillies in his "Place Names of Argyll" appears to accept the popular derivation, Double-pointed (Da-Bharr) Island. In 1854, was built on the north of the island by the lighthouse engineers David and Thomas Stevenson. Campbeltown Picture House
The Campbeltown Picture House is a theatre located in Campbeltown, Scotland. Opened in 1913, it was one of the first purpose-built cinemas in Scotland. It is the only remaining example of an Atmospheric theatre in Scotland. History The Picture House, known locally as The Wee Pictures, was designed by the architect Albert Gardner, a student of architecture at Glasgow School of Art from 1901 to 1905. It opened in May 1913, and aside from a short hiatus in the 1980s, has been used continuously as a cinema since. The building is three storeys high with the projection room on the top floor, the balcony on the middle floor and the entrance on the ground floor. Gardiner was asked to refurbish the cinema in 1935, and did so in the "atmospheric style". This included a blue sky with moving white clouds, and the inclusion of small plasterwork buildings to recall a Mediterranean courtyard. Campbeltown Town Hall
Campbeltown Town Hall is a municipal structure in Main Street in Campbeltown, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. The structure, which is used as a community events venue, is a Category B listed building. History The first municipal building in the town was a tolbooth which dated back to the appointment of Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll as the local laird in the 17th century. It consisted of a prison on the ground floor and an assembly room on the first floor. By the mid-18th century, it had become dilapidated and the burgh council decided to demolish it and to erect a new building on the same site. The new building was financed by a combination of an annual tax on the burgh inhabitants, by borrowing and by contributions from the local freemasons' lodge and from the Commissioner of Supply.
