The Leader of the Opposition in the Tripura Legislative Assembly is an elected Member of Legislative Assembly who leads the official opposition in the Tripura Legislative Assembly. Official Opposition is a term used in Tripura Legislative Assembly to designate the political party which has secured the second largest number of seats in Tripura assembly. In order to get formal recognition, the party must have at least 10% of total membership of the Legislative Assembly. Since 1963, the Tripura Legislative Assembly has had 12 leaders of the opposition. Role The Opposition's main role is to question the government of the day and hold them accountable to the public. Jitendra Chaudhury (born 27 June 1958) is an Indian communist politician who is a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and serving as the incumbent Member of the Legislative Assembly (India), MLA from Sabroom Assembly constituency, Sabroom. Previously, he had won the 2014 Indian general elections from the Tripura East (Lok Sabha constituency) before conceding defeat against Rebati Tripura of BJP in 2019 Indian general elections, 2019. Jitendra Choudhury is the current Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist) Tripura State Committee. Dasarth Debbarma (2 February 1916 – 14 October 1998) was an Indian Communist politician in the Indian state of Tripura. He was chief minister of Tripura from 1993 to 1998.
