Island
An island (or isle) is an isolated piece of habitat that is surrounded by a dramatically different habitat, such as water. Donaukanal
The Donaukanal ("Danube Canal") is a former arm of the river Danube, now regulated as a water channel (since 1598), within the city of Vienna, Austria. It is long and, unlike the Danube itself, it borders Vienna's city centre, Innere Stadt, where the Wien River (''Wienfluss'') flows into it."Donaukanal", aeiou Encyclopedia (see below: External links). The Donaukanal bifurcates from the main river at the Nußdorf weir and lock complex, in Döbling, and joins it again just upstream of the "Praterspitz", at the Prater park in Simmering. Veľký Lél Island
Island Veľký Lél ( Slovakian: Veľkolélsky ostrov, Hungarian: Nagy-Léli sziget) is a river island. It is located on the Danube near the settlement of Veľký Lél, which is today a local part of the village of Zlatná na Ostrove in the district of Komárno. There are meadows, alluvial forests and tall solitary trees. It serves as pastures for cattle. From the north, it is bordered by the Danubian river arm and from the south by the main bed of the Danube. Ecological significance The island is part of the Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area, the international wetland – the Dunajské luhy Ramsar site, as well as the NATURA 2000 territory. Bird Island, Slovakia
Bird Island ( sk, Vtáčí ostrov) is a island in the Hrušovská zdrž (2518 ha), which is part of Gabčíkovo Reservoir, south-west of Šamorín, Slovakia. The island was built because of the constructions of the Gabčíkovo-Nagymaros dams on the Danube as habitat compensation for areas consequently flooded. The island is part of proposed special protected areas Dunajské luhy for waterbirds. The most important breeding birds are Mediterranean gull (''Larus melanocephalus''), which is the only breeding site in Slovakia, and common redshank (''Tringa totanus''), for which it is the only breeding site in West Slovakia. Access is prohibited during the breeding and wintering seasons. Benkove ostrovy is group of twelve islets (0.6 ha) which are located in the Gabčíkovo water reservoir south of Bratislava, west from Kalinkovo village. They were built in the years 2006 and 2007 as part of flood protection for the Slovak capital, Bratislava. The islets, and their structure, were proposed and built to facilitate breeding waterbirds which have few possibilities for breeding after the construction of the Gabčíkovo water reservoir in 1992. Gabčíkovo–Nagymaros Dams
The Gabčíkovo–Nagymaros Dams (more precisely ''Gabčíkovo–Nagymaros Waterworks'', hu, Bős–nagymarosi vízlépcső, ''Slovak language, Slovak: Sústava vodných diel Gabčíkovo – Nagymaros'') is a large barrage project on the Danube. It was initiated by the Budapest Treaty of 16 September 1977 between the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the Hungarian People's Republic. The project aimed at preventing catastrophic floods, improving river navigability and producing clean electricity. Only a part of the project has been finished in Slovakia, under the name ''Gabčíkovo Dam'', because Hungary first suspended, then tried to terminate, the project due to environmental and economic concerns. Žitný ostrov (Rye Island), also called Veľký Žitný ostrov (Great Rye Island), (german: Große Schüttinsel or Great Schütt Island, hu, Csallóköz) to differentiate it from Malý Žitný ostrov (Small Rye Island) (german: Kleine Schüttinsel or Little Schütt Island, hu, Szigetköz), is a river island in southwestern Slovakia, extending from Bratislava to Komárno.
