Thoroughbred
The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word ''thoroughbred'' is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. Thoroughbreds are considered " hot-blooded" horses that are known for their agility, speed, and spirit. The Thoroughbred, as it is known today, was developed in 17th- and 18th-century England, when native mares were crossbred with imported Oriental stallions of Arabian, Barb, and Turkoman breeding. All modern Thoroughbreds can trace their pedigrees to three stallions originally imported into England in the 17th and 18th centuries, and to a larger number of foundation mares of mostly English breeding. Golden Slipper Stakes
The Golden Slipper Stakes is an Australian Turf Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for two-year-old horses run over 1,200 metres on turf at set weights conditions, held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney, Australia. It is the premier two year old race in Australia and is the world's richest race for two-year-old Thoroughbreds. Prize money is A$5,000,000. Midsummer is a celebration of the season of summer usually held at a date around the summer solstice. It has pagan pre-Christian roots in Europe. Barbados Gold Cup
The Barbados Gold Cup is a Barbadian Group I Thoroughbred horse race run annually in late February/early March since 1982 at the Garrison Savannah Racetrack in Bridgetown, Barbados. Contested over a turf course at a distance of 1,800 meters (8.95 furlongs), it is open to horses, age three or older. The most important event on the Barbados horse racing calendar, it was inaugurated in 1982 with the intention of attracting the top horses from Caribbean countries. Since 1997 the race has been sponsored by the Sandy Lane Hotel. In 1999, nineteen-year-old Attie S. Joseph III became the youngest owner to win the Gold Cup. In 2007, Elizabeth Deane became the first female trainer to saddle a winner of the Barbados Gold Cup. The race was not run in 2021 and 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but returned in March 2023. Barbados Derby
Barbados is an island country in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies, in the Caribbean region of the Americas, and the most easterly of the Caribbean Islands. It occupies an area of and has a population of about 287,000 (2019 estimate). Its capital and largest city is Bridgetown. Inhabited by Kalinago people since the 13th century, and prior to that by other Amerindians, Spanish navigators took possession of Barbados in the late 15th century, claiming it for the Crown of Castile. It first appeared on a Spanish map in 1511. VRC Derby
The Victoria Derby, also known as the Penfolds Victoria Derby, is a Victoria Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds held under Set Weights conditions over a distance of 2,500 metres at Flemington Racecourse, in Melbourne, Australia scheduled annually on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Total prize money for the race is A$2,000,000. History Originally run at a distance of miles, in 1972 it was changed to 2,400 metres to conform to the metric system. It was changed again in 1973 to its present distance of 2,500 metres. First run in 1855, the first three editions were won by fillies but the last time a filly won was in 1923 when Frances Tressady claimed victory. Stradbroke Handicap
The Stradbroke Handicap is a Brisbane Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred open handicap horse race, run over a distance of 1,400 metres at Eagle Farm Racecourse, Brisbane in June during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival. It is one of the highlight races on the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival with total prize money of A$1,500,000 History The race is named after Lord Stradbroke, relative to Henry John Rous, originator of the weight-for-age scale in thoroughbred racing. Five two-year-olds have won the race, the last was Wiggle, carrying 7 stone 5 pounds (~46.5 kg) in 1958. The 1,400 metre race and track record is 1:20.2 established by Toledo in 1998.
