Earthquake
An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or temblor) is the shaking of the surface of the Earth resulting from a sudden release of energy in the Earth's lithosphere that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes can range in intensity, from those that are so weak that they cannot be felt, to those violent enough to propel objects and people into the air, damage critical infrastructure, and wreak destruction across entire cities. The seismic activity of an area is the frequency, type, and size of earthquakes experienced over a particular time period. The seismicity at a particular location in the Earth is the average rate of seismic energy release per unit volume. The word ''tremor'' is also used for non-earthquake seismic rumbling. 1998 Azores Islands Earthquake
The 1998 Azores Islands earthquake (also known as the Faial earthquake) struck with an epicenter in the Atlantic Ocean, off the Azores Islands of Portugal at 05:19 local time. The shallow ( deep) mainshock, which measured 6.1 on the moment magnitude scale caused significant damage on the island of Faial and Corvo. At least 10 people died, 100 were injured, and 2,500 people were left without homes. 1980 Azores Islands Earthquake
Striking the Autonomous Region of Azores on 1 January, the 1980 Azores Island earthquake killed 61 people and injured over 400, causing severe damage on the islands of Terceira and São Jorge. Measuring 6.9 on the moment magnitude scale, it also shook the islands of Pico and Faial, and resulted from a strike slip fracture, typical of other historical Azorean earthquakes. The 1964 Rosais earthquake ( pt, Crise sísmica dos Rosais) was a series of seismic swarms occurring in February 1964, leading to two major earthquakes on 15 and 21 February, resulting in the destruction of most of the habitable dwellings on the western part of the island of São Jorge, in the archipelago of the Azores.
