1998 Azores Islands Earthquake
The 1998 Azores Islands earthquake (also known as the Faial earthquake) struck with an epicenter in the Atlantic Ocean, off the Azores Islands of Portugal at 05:19 local time. The shallow ( deep) mainshock, which measured 6.1 on the moment magnitude scale caused significant damage on the island of Faial and Corvo. At least 10 people died, 100 were injured, and 2,500 people were left without homes. Tectonic setting The Azores Islands mark the location where the African (Nubian), Eurasian and North American plates meet at the ride-ridge-fault Azores Triple Junction. To the west is the Mid-Atlantic ridge; a 16,000-km-long divergent boundary on the seafloor of the Atlantic Ocean which separates the Eurasian Plate from the North American Plate. Horta () is a municipality and city in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores encompassing the island of Faial. Divergent Boundary
In plate tectonics, a divergent boundary or divergent plate boundary (also known as a constructive boundary or an extensional boundary) is a linear feature that exists between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other. Divergent boundaries within continents initially produce rifts, which eventually become rift valleys. Most active divergent plate boundaries occur between oceanic plates and exist as mid-oceanic ridges. Current research indicates that complex convection within the Earth's mantle allows material to rise to the base of the lithosphere beneath each divergent plate boundary. This supplies the area with huge amounts of heat and a reduction in pressure that melts rock from the asthenosphere (or upper mantle) beneath the rift area, forming large flood basalt or lava flows. The European macroseismic scale (EMS) is the basis for evaluation of seismic intensity in European countries and is also used in a number of countries outside Europe. Issued in 1998 as an update of the test version from 1992, the scale is referred to as EMS-98. Overview The history of the EMS began in 1988 when the European Seismological Commission (ESC) decided to review and update the Medvedev–Sponheuer–Karnik scale (MSK-64), which was used in its basic form in Europe for almost a quarter of a century. After more than five years of intensive research and development and a four-year testing period, the new scale was officially released. Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale
The Modified Mercalli intensity scale (MM, MMI, or MCS), developed from Giuseppe Mercalli's Mercalli intensity scale of 1902, is a seismic intensity scale used for measuring the intensity of shaking produced by an earthquake. It measures the effects of an earthquake at a given location, distinguished from the earthquake's inherent force or strength as measured by seismic magnitude scales (such as the "" magnitude usually reported for an earthquake). Fault Plane Solution
The focal mechanism of an earthquake describes the deformation in the source region that generates the seismic waves. In the case of a fault-related event it refers to the orientation of the fault plane that slipped and the slip vector and is also known as a fault-plane solution. Focal mechanisms are derived from a solution of the moment tensor for the earthquake, which itself is estimated by an analysis of observed seismic waveforms. The focal mechanism can be derived from observing the pattern of "first motions", that is, whether the first arriving P waves break up or down. This method was used before waveforms were recorded and analysed digitally and this method is still used for earthquakes too small for easy moment tensor solution. 1941 Gloria Fault Earthquake
The 1941 Gloria Fault earthquake occurred at 18:03:57 Coordinated Universal Time, UTC in the northern Atlantic Ocean on 25 November 1941. It had a magnitude of about 8.0 on the moment magnitude scale and a maximum perceived intensity of IX (''Violent'') on the Mercalli intensity scale. 1980 Azores Islands Earthquake
Striking the Autonomous Region of Azores on 1 January, the 1980 Azores Island earthquake killed 61 people and injured over 400, causing severe damage on the islands of Terceira and São Jorge.
