Draughts
Checkers (American English), also known as draughts (; British English), is a group of strategy board games for two players which involve diagonal moves of uniform game pieces and mandatory captures by jumping over opponent pieces. Checkers is developed from alquerque. The term "checkers" derives from the checkered board which the game is played on, whereas "draughts" derives from the verb "to draw" or "to move". The most popular forms of checkers in Anglophone countries are American checkers (also called English draughts), which is played on an 8×8 checkerboard; Russian draughts, Turkish draughts both on an 8x8 board, and International draughts, played on a 10×10 board – the latter is widely played in many countries worldwide. Andrew Anderson (draughts)
Andrew Anderson was a Scottish draughts (checkers) player and author who standardized the rules of the game. Born in Braidwood, South Lanarkshire on 3 May 1799, Anderson's parents were William Anderson from Law village and Mary Selkirk from Waygateshaw. Anderson was baptized at St Luke’s church in Carluke, Scotland on 26 May 1799. Anderson was employed as a stocking weaver but played draughts as a hobby. By the early 1820s he was considered the best draughts player in Scotland and was regularly challenged by foreign players. One player, James Wylie, known as the ‘Herd Laddie’ was Anderson's strongest opponent. Over a period of nine years, the two men played five matches. Don Lafferty
Don Lafferty (1933–1998) was a Grandmaster checkers (British English: draughts) player. In 1982 he defeated Derek Oldbury for the World GAYP (Go as you please) championship with a score of 1-0-23. He was challenged for the championship in 1984 by Paul Davis, winning easily 5-0-15. In 1986 he defended his title again by drawing James Morrison with a score of 0-0-24 and in 1989 he defeated Elbert Lowder 4-3-16. He contested for the 3-move restriction title twice in his career but never succeeded. In 1987 he failed to defeat Marion Tinsley, losing by a score of 2-0-36. In 1996 he tried again, this time against Ron King, but he only managed a 5-5-30 draw. In his matches with Chinook he had 8 wins, 7 losses and 109 draws. Derek Oldbury (1924 - July, 1994) (often known as DEO) was a British draughts champion from Devon. He was a rival of Marion Tinsley and, after Tinsley, "probably the second best player of all time." Oldbury was interested in Go As You Please (GAYP) draughts, in which players are free to choose their own opening moves. He competed in 7 world championship matches, winning in 1976, 1976 (GAYP) and 1991 (3-move). Charles Walker (checkers Player)
Charles Clendell Walker (born 1934) is a former Mississippi state checkers champion and minister. He founded the International Checker Hall of Fame in Petal, Mississippi in 1979. Walker is also known in checkers history for his record-setting victories in simultaneous checkers matches. In a January 1992 match that lasted over eight hours, he played 229 checkers games simultaneously. He won 227 contests, lost one and tied one. In 1994, he set a Guinness World Record while playing 306 checkers games simultaneously and losing only one. Walker started playing checkers at a young age: "At age 7, his family was flooded out of its home. To pass time in the emergency shelter, he played checkers. Later he discovered his father-in-law was shy. He broke the ice by playing checkers with him on the front porch, and getting beaten." Carl Sylvester "Buster" Smith (January 26, 1921 – October 8, 1992) was an eleven-time "Top Master" in the American Pool Checkers Association Division Championship. He won the Top Master title in 1967, 1970, 1972–76, 1982–83, 1991, and 1992, and Master in 1968 and 1969. He began playing in his native Chicago and was citywide champion by 17. He remained Chicago's best player until his death in 1992. He did not play for money, and made his living working at the post office.
