This list of dental schools in the United Kingdom includes all eighteen Dental Schools or Schools of Medicine and Dentistry in the United Kingdom which are recognised by the General Dental Council and lead to a Bachelor of Dental Surgery, dental degree of a Universities in the United Kingdom, UK university. General Dental Council
The General Dental Council (GDC) is an organisation which regulates dental professionals in the United Kingdom. It keeps an up-to-date register of all qualified dentists and other dental care professionals such as: dental hygienists, dental therapists, dental nurses, dental technicians and clinical dental technicians. It was established in 1956 to set and maintain standards in UK dentistry, with the aims of protecting the general public from unqualified dental professionals. Its headquarters are in Wimpole Street, Marylebone, London. The General Dental Council has also stated that it aims to promote confidence in dental professionals and to be at the forefront of health care regulation. The School of Dental Sciences, Newcastle University and Hospital was founded in 1895 in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Manchester Dental School
The University Dental Hospital of Manchester is a dental facility in Manchester, England. It is managed by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. History The Dental Hospital was established in association with the School of Medicine at Owens College in 1884. It was then at Grosvenor Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock and removed to another house, in Devonshire Street, in 1892. Fund raising was slow in response to a public appeal and only in 1908 was the hospital able to occupy a new building on Oxford Road next to the Manchester Museum, designed in the Edwardian Baroque style by the architects Charles Heathcote & Sons. In 1909 the dental hospital established an orthodontics department. In the 1940s, a new hospital was built further west on Bridgeford Street through the generosity of Sir Samuel Turner (1878–1955).
