List Of County Routes In Niagara County, New York
County routes in Niagara County are not signed, and there is no apparent numbering pattern. Most of the county routes act as primary roads in the less developed areas and also serve to interconnect the various villages and hamlets of Niagara County. Niagara County maintains few county routes, including only the most important connecting thoroughfares, and those are maintained by the Niagara County highway department. Most of the roads in the County, including many of the local through highways, are maintained by the towns. New York Barge Canal
The New York State Canal System (formerly known as the New York State Barge Canal) is a successor to the Erie Canal and other canals within New York. Currently, the system is composed of the Erie Canal, the Oswego Canal, the Cayuga–Seneca Canal, and the Champlain Canal. In 2014 the system was listed as a national historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in its entirety, and in 2016 it was designated a National Historic Landmark. Middleport is a village in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 1,840 at the 2010 census. The mail ZIP code is 14105. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Village of Middleport lies on the eastern edge of Niagara County, mostly inside the boundaries of the Town of Royalton, but a small part is within the Town of Hartland. Middleport is a port on the Erie Canal. History Settlers began moving into the area ''circa'' 1808. The first store opened in the future village in 1822, before the canal reached the community. New York State Route 429 (NY 429) is a north–south state highway located entirely within Niagara County, New York, in the United States. It extends for from an intersection with NY 265 and NY 384 in North Tonawanda to a junction with NY 104 ( Ridge Road) on the border between the towns of Cambria and Lewiston. Although it is relatively minor in length, the route is regionally important nonetheless as it connects North Tonawanda to some of the county's interior regions. About midway between North Tonawanda and Ridge Road, NY 429 serves the hamlet of Sanborn, where it briefly overlaps with NY 31. At Pekin, a community situated between Sanborn and NY 104, NY 429 descends the Niagara Escarpment. Cambria, New York
Cambria is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 5,839 at the 2010 census. Cambria is an early name for Wales. The Town of Cambria is in the center of Niagara County. New York State Route 93 and New York State Route 104 pass through the town. History Some of the early settlers were from Wales, and gave the town the name of their origin. The Town of Cambria was established in 1808 when Niagara county was formed. Cambria was the original town of Niagara County; all other towns were formed from its territory after 1812. Wilson is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 5,993 at the 2010 census. The town was named after an early settler, Reuben Wilson, who built and dwelt in a log cabin on the shore of Lake Ontario at the site of what would become the Village of Wilson. Porter is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 6,771 at the 2010 census. The town was named after Judge Augustus Porter. The Town of Porter lies in the northwest corner of Niagara County and is north of the City of Niagara Falls. History For thousands of years, the area was inhabited by various cultures of indigenous peoples. At the time of European encounter, this was the territory of the powerful Iroquois Confederacy, based in present-day New York state. Hartland, New York
Hartland is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 4,117 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Hartland, Vermont, the homeplace of some early settlers. The Town of Hartland is on the eastern border of the county. History The town was founded when Zebulon Barnum, Isaac Southwell, and John Morrison settled in the area in 1803. The Town of Hartland was created in 1812 from an eastern section of the Town of Cambria. Wheatfield is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 18,117 at the 2010 census. The name stems from the agricultural use of the town lands, the growing of wheat. The Town of Wheatfield is east of Niagara Falls International Airport. History The Town of Wheatfield was formed in 1836 from the Town of Niagara.
