In Lithuania, there are 103 cities (in Lithuanian: singular – miestas, plural – miestai). The term ''city'' is defined by the Parliament of Lithuania as compact urban areas populated by more than 3,000 people of whom at least two thirds work in the industry or service sector. Those settlements which have a population of less than 3,000 but historically had city status are still considered to be cities. Smaller settlements are called ''miestelis'' (plural ''miesteliai'') which is translated as towns. Even smaller settlements (villages) are called ''kaimas'' (plural ''kaimai''). Often the official status is not clear and people refer to both towns and villages as ''gyvenvietė'' (plural ''gyvenvietės'') which in essence means ''settlement''. Visaginas
Visaginas () is the centre of Lithuania's youngest municipality, located on the north-eastern edge of the country. It was built as a town for workers engaged in the construction of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. Visaginas is the only town in Lithuania where the majority of population speaks Russian as the first language. Originally the aerial view of Visaginas was designed to resemble a butterfly. However, after work on the nuclear power plant was cancelled, so was further construction of the town. Currently Visaginas consists of three residential regions that locals refer to as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Microdistricts. Visaginas has 14 streets. The city grew up in a pine forest by Lake Visaginas. Tourism is currently an area of great potential, as is the possibility of a new nuclear power plant. Vilnius County ( lt, Vilniaus apskritis) is the largest of the 10 counties of Lithuania, located in the east of the country around the city Vilnius. On 1 July 2010, the county administration was abolished, and since that date, Vilnius County remains as the territorial and statistical unit. Palanga
Palanga (; bat-smg, Palonga; pl, Połąga; german: Polangen) is a seaside resort town in western Lithuania, on the shore of the Baltic Sea. Palanga is the busiest summer resort in Lithuania and has sandy beaches (18 km, 11 miles long and up to 300 metres, 1000 ft wide) and sand dunes. Neringa Municipality
Neringa () or Neringa Municipality ( lt, Neringos savivaldybė) is a municipality of Klaipėda County in westernmost Lithuania, comprising several villages in the Curonian Spit. In terms of population, it is the smallest municipality of the country. Name The name of the city is relatively new and is not found in old scriptures in this form. The name is derived from a German word ''Neringe, Nerunge, Nehrung'' which itself is a derivative of a curonian word ''nerija'' meaning a long peninsular spit. Until the 2000 Lithuanian municipality reform, it was known as Neringa City, although there was never a true "city" there. Druskininkai
Druskininkai (; pl, Druskieniki; be, Друскенiкi; yi, דרוזגעניק, translit=Druzgenik) is a spa town on the Nemunas River in southern Lithuania, close to the borders of Belarus and Poland. The city of Druskininkai has a population of 12,055 and dates back as a spa resort to the 19th century. Geography The town is located at the Ratnyčia River estuary to the Nemunas River and is surrounded by a natural forest reserve.
