Impfondo
Impfondo is a town in the northeastern Republic of the Congo with a population of around 41,000 people, lying on the Oubangui River. It is home to an airport and is linked by river barge to Brazzaville and to Bangui. It is the administrative centre of Impfondo District and the Likouala Region. Historically called Desbordesville, Impfondo is usually a stopping point on the way to Bangui by barge. It is a frontier kind of place, the last vestige of what could be called civilisation in an area overwhelmed by dense forest swamps and small villages. Rumours abound of a police force and sets of soldiers more corrupt than in other parts of the Congo, probably due to its remoteness, in addition to being so close to the Democratic Republic of Congo over the river. Pointe-Noire (; kg, Njinji, french: Ndjindji with the letter d following French spelling standards) is the second largest city in the Republic of the Congo, following the capital of Brazzaville, and an autonomous department since 2004. Christianity is the predominant religion in Republic of the Congo. Different sources give varying population figures for various denominations. According to the CIA World Factbook, the people of the Republic of the Congo are largely a mix of Catholics (33.3%), Awakening/Revival churches (22.3%) and other Protestants (19.9%). Followers of Islam make up 1.6%, primarily due to an influx of foreign workers into the urban centers.
