Apostolic Exarchate In The Czech Republic
The Apostolic Exarchate of the Greek Catholic Church in the Czech Republic is an Eastern Catholic institution overseeing Catholics of byzantine-slavonic rite in the Czech Republic. It uses the localized Byzantine Rite in archaic Church Slavonic language. Its cathedral episcopal see is St. Clement's Cathedral, Prague. History On March 13, 1996, Pope John Paul II proclaimed a new Apostolic Exarchate (exempt pre-diocese) for Eastern Catholics of the Byzantine Rite in the Czech Republic under the rule of the Apostolic See. The church was built on territory previously covered by the Byzantine Rite, the Slovak Catholic Metropolitanate sui juris of Prešov. Our Lady Of The Assumption Co-Cathedral, Opava
Co-Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary ( cs, Konkatedrála Nanebevzetí Panny Marie; also called Our Lady of the Assumption Co-Cathedral or simply Opava Cathedral for a short) is a Gothic church in the historic city centre of Opava in the Czech Republic. History Its construction is believed to start during the reign of the Bohemian King Ottokar I (1198–1230). The cathedral is built of red bricks, having three naves and two towers. It is built in the fourteenth century Gothic style. Its southern tower is 102 metres tall (a few metres taller than Prague Castle Tower) and remains to be the tallest church tower in Silesia. Establishing the Church of the Assumption in Opava is associated with the Teutonic Knights. The construction of the church probably began shortly after 1204. Cathedral Of The Divine Saviour
Cathedral of the Divine Saviour ( cs, Katedrála Božského Spasitele), located in the center of Ostrava, is the second largest Roman Catholic cathedral in Moravia and Silesia (after the basilica in Velehrad near Uherské Hradiště). This three-nave Neo-Renaissance basilica with a semi-circular apse and two 67m high towers is dating since 1889 (building started in 1883). The church was designed by Gustav Meretta, the official architect of the Archbishop of Olomouc, and the interior by Max von Ferstel. The main nave is 14 m wide and 22 m high, the two side aisles are 7 m wide and 10 m high each. The seating capacity of the cathedral is 4,000 people.
