Atyrau ( kk, Атырау, ', ; russian: Атырау, ), known until 1991 as Guryev (russian: Гурьев, ), is a city in Kazakhstan and the capital of Atyrau Region. Atyrau is a transcontinental city, at the mouth of the Ural River on the Caspian Sea, between Europe and Asia, west of Almaty and east of the Russian city of Astrakhan. The Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Our Lord (russian: Собор Преображения Господня) also called Catholic Cathedral of Atyrau is a religious building affiliated with the Catholic Church which is in the Avangard street of the city of Atyrau, 2 in Eurasian country of Kazakhstan, and which serves as the seat of the apostolic administration of Atyrau. The local apostolic administration (''Administratio Apostolica Atirauensis'' or Апостольская администратура Атырау) was founded in 1999 under the pontificate of John Paul II by the bull ''"Ad aptius consulendum"'' while the parish was created. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Fatima (Russian: Собор Пресвятой Девы Марии Фатимской) is a Catholic cathedral in neo-Gothic style. It is the seat of the Diocese of Karaganda, Kazakhstan. It was built between 2003 and 2012, and was consecrated by Cardinal Angelo Sodano on September 9, 2012. It was in 2003 that Bishop Lenga, Apostolic Administrator of Karaganda, obtained permission from the authorities to acquire land for the construction of a new cathedral. The old cathedral of St. Joseph remained small. The work was financed by donations from abroad to honor victims of the persecutions of the communist regime that sent many priests and lay Catholics to the correctional complex "Karlag". Carried out under the neo-Gothic style, it was built according to Vladimir Sergeyev's plans. Bishop Schneider actively participated in the search for funding from Germany. Our Mother of Perpetual Help Cathedral (russian: Собор Божией Матери Неустанной Помощи) is the Catholic Cathedral of Astana, Kazakhstan, and the headquarters of the Archdiocese of Mary Most Holy in Astana (''Archidioecesis Sanctae Mariae in Astana''). History On April 8, 1958, Susan Bridges first attempted to provide Catholics in Astana a place of worship. While she purchased a house of prayer, her attempt failed after corruption charges emerged related to the purchase. For most of the 1960s and 70s, the Catholic community gathered in secret to escape the oppression of the Soviet regime. On September 20, 1979, the community was able to officially register with the city, also allowing them to purchase a house for prayer, which was consecrated on October 14, 1979.
