Bishop
A bishop is an ordained clergy member who is entrusted with a position of authority and oversight in a religious institution. In Christianity, bishops are normally responsible for the governance of dioceses. The role or office of bishop is called episcopacy. Organizationally, several Christian denominations utilize ecclesiastical structures that call for the position of bishops, while other denominations have dispensed with this office, seeing it as a symbol of power. Bishops have also exercised political authority. Traditionally, bishops claim apostolic succession, a direct historical lineage dating back to the original Twelve Apostles or Saint Paul. Petrus Kenicius
Petrus Kenicius (1555 – 3 February 1636) was Archbishop of Uppsala in the Church of Sweden from 1609 to his death. He got his education from the Universities of Wittenberg and Rostock. In 1589 he was put in prison by King John III of Sweden, together with, among others, Nicolaus Olai Bothniensis who would become archbishop in 1599–1600. The reason were disagreements with the King's non-Lutheran liturgy. After being released, he was at the Uppsala Synod in 1593 as one of the twelve assessors. And in 1595 he was ordained Bishop of Skara. He was considered a fine and hardworking person who dedicated much time and care to the University in Uppsala and the Church. Johan Dalman
Johan Fredrik Dalman (born 6 July 1960) is a Swedish bishop. Biography Johan Dalman is the son of director Knut Dalman and Maj Tegström. He is married to art historian Margareta Nisser Dalman, who is senior curator at the Royal Collections. The couple have three children. Dalman was ordained a priest in 1990 for the Archdiocese of Uppsala. He became assistant pastor in Enköping, secretary for theology and ecumenism at the Church Office in Uppsala and publisher of Verbum publishers. Gustaf Emanuel Hildebrand Aulén (15 May 1879 – 16 December 1977) was the Bishop of Diocese of Strängnäs, Strängnäs in the Church of Sweden, a Lutheran theologian, and the author of ''Christus Victor'', a work which still exerts considerable influence on contemporary theological thinking on the Atonement in Christianity, atonement. Carl Jesper Benzelius (16 January 1714 – 2 January 1793) was a Swedish theologian, professor, and bishop of the Diocese of Strängnäs from 1776 to 1793. Biography Born in Uppsala to archbishop Erik Benzelius the younger, Benzelius was brought up at the home of his grandfather, Bishop Jesper Swedberg. He was then guided by his uncle Henric Benzelius at Lund University and graduated with his Master of Arts degree in 1738, after which he spent a few years in England, France and Holland. In 1741 he became a temporary priest of the royal court, receiving a permanent position in 1742. Between 1743 and 1744, he again traveled abroad, and stayed particularly in Helmstedt, where he defended his dissertation under the famous Johann Lorenz von Mosheim, and became an honorary doctor of theology. Erik Benzelius The Elder
Erik Benzelius (the Elder) (16 December 1632 – 17 February 1709) was a Swedish theologian and Archbishop of Uppsala. Benzelius was born at the Bentseby farm in the parish of Luleå in northern Sweden, son of the farmer and lay assessor (''nämndeman'') Henrik Jakobsson. He took a family name derived from his birthplace, rather than using the patronymic as was common in the Swedish peasantry. He was raised by a relative who was a merchant in Uppsala, and studied at Uppsala University, where he completed his ''filosofie magister'' degree in 1661. Erik Gabrielsson Emporagrius
Erik Gabrielsson Emporagrius (1606 – 14 March 1674) was a Sweden, Swedish professor and bishop. Erik Emporagrius was born in TorsÃ¥ker, Hofors, TorsÃ¥ker in Gästrikland, son of Gabriel Emporagrius, the vicar there. He studied at Uppsala University, where he was awarded a master's degree in 1632, and at universities abroad. On his return to Sweden in 1637, he was appointed professor of physics at Uppsala, but after a few years he exchanged this position for a Chair (academic), chair in the faculty of theology. Laurentius Paulinus Gothus
Laurentius Paulinus Gothus (10 November 1565 – 29 November 1646) was a Sweden, Swedish theologian, astronomer and Archbishop of Uppsala. Biography Gothus was born Lars Paulsson at Söderköping in Östergötland County, Sweden. In 1588, Gothus travelled to Germany and studied in the Rostock University for three years. He was influenced by Pierre de la Ramée (1515–1572) and his philosophy. After receiving a Master's degree, he returned to Uppsala in time for the Uppsala Synod in 1593 where the founding dogmas of the Church of Sweden were made final. Botvid Sunesson
Botvid Sunesson (died 1562) was a Swedish prelate who served as the Bishop of Strängnäs from 1536 till 1555 and again from 1561 till 1562. Biography He was appointed Bishop of Strängnäs in 1536 after studying in for a master's degree in Wittenberg, possibly with Olaus Petri. He was a canon in Linköping Cathedral. Upon his appointment as bishop, he was the first Bishop of Strängnäs aligned with the Lutheranism. Diocese Of Strängnäs
The Diocese of Strängnäs ( sv, Strängnäs stift) is a part of the Lutheran Church of Sweden and has its seat in Strängnäs Cathedral in Strängnäs, south of Lake Mälaren. The diocese is made up of the two provinces Närke and Södermanland (except for eastern Södermanland, which belongs to Stockholm County and the Diocese of Stockholm). The diocese was first a Latin Catholic suffragan of the then Danish Diocese of Lund, which in 1104 was elevated to an archdiocese and became the Metropolitan see of all of Scandinavia. From 1164 on Strängnäs was suffragan to the Swedish archbishop of Uppsala. It was established during the 12th century by the English missionary Saint Eskil.
