List Of Artworks On Stamps Of The United States
This article lists people whose artwork has been featured on stamps of the United States. For this purpose "featured" is not limited to complete works but includes any identifiable representation of their works. Thus the "Geophysical Year" stamp of 1958 is considered to feature the work of Michelangelo because it shows two hands from his ''The Creation of Adam''. The "issue year" refers to the year when that person's work listed appeared on a stamp of the United States. Many artists have had the same work appear on different U.S. postages stamps and many artists have had multiple works appear on U.S. postage stamps. The list does not include artists who were commissioned by the U.S. Post Office Department (or its successor, the United States Postal Service) to specifically create artwork for a postage stamp. Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (; 6 March 1475 – 18 February 1564), known as Michelangelo (), was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet of the High Renaissance. Randolph Rogers
Randolph Rogers (July 6, 1825 in Waterloo, New York – January 15, 1892 in Rome, Italy) was an American Neoclassical sculptor. An expatriate who lived most of his life in Italy, his works ranged from popular subjects to major commissions, including the ''Columbus Doors'' at the U.S. Capitol and American Civil War monuments. Biography Rogers was born in Waterloo, New York, and his family moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan when he was a child. He developed an interest in wood cuts and wood engraving, and moved to New York City about 1847, but was unsuccessful in finding employment as an engraver. While working as a clerk in a dry-goods store, his employers discovered his native talent as a sculptor and provided funds for him to travel to Italy. He began study in Florence in 1848, where he studied briefly under Lorenzo Bartolini. He then opened a studio in Rome in 1851. Columbus Doors
''Columbus Doors'' (1855–1861), also known as the ''Rogers Doors'', are a pair of massive bronze doors modeled by sculptor Randolph Rogers for the East Front of the United States Capitol in Washington, DC. They open into the Rotunda, and depict events from the life of Christopher Columbus. History Rogers, an expatriate American artist trained and living in Italy, was a Neoclassical sculptor noted for his carved works in marble. He visited the United States in 1855, and was awarded the commission for the doors. He had never done anything on this scale, and was not known for working in bronze. Rogers's sculptural theme was ''Scenes from the Life of Columbus''. Each door has four panels illustrating significant events, and the semi-circular transom above the pair illustrates Columbus landing in the New World. Gustav Adolf Carl Closs also as Closs, A., Closs, A.G., Closz (or Closz), Adolf Gustav (6 May 1864, Stuttgart – 3 September 1938, Berlin) was a German painter, illustrator and heraldist and an entomologist. Biography His father was the woodcut artist, Adolf Closs (1840–1894). His father's twin brother was the landscape painter, Gustav Paul Closs. William Henry Powell
William Henry Powell (February 14, 1823 – October 6, 1879), was an American artist who was born and died in New York City. Powell is known for a painting of the Battle of Lake Erie, of which one copy hangs in the Ohio state capitol building and the other, in the United States Capitol. Powell has a second piece of artwork displayed in the United States Capitol Rotunda, the '' Discovery of the Mississippi by De Soto A.D. 1541.'' Career William Henry Powell studied under artist Henry Inman in New York City prior to receiving a commission from the United States Congress in 1847 to paint the last large historical painting in the Capitol rotunda. Powell selected the discovery of the Mississippi River by Hernando de Soto as the subject of the painting and completed it in 1853.
