Anime Directors
An animation director is either the director in charge of all aspects of the animation process during the production of an animated film or television, and animated segment for a live action film or television show, or the animator in charge of correcting layouts and drawings. The difference between the two is largely the difference between the western and eastern animation industries. Responsibilities Western production pipeline In western animation, such as Disney, the responsibilities of an animation director include directing the storyboards, character designs, background animation, and other technical aspects of a project's animation. Some animated film productions may split the duties between an animation director, who focuses on the creation of the animation, and a director who oversees all other aspects of the film. Osamu Kobayashi (animation Director)
is a Japanese animator and animation director, best known for ''Creamy Mami, the Magic Angel''. He was born in Fuchuu-shi, Tokyo. He belongs to Ajia-do Animation Works. In 1963, he entered Toei Animation at the same time as Tsutomu Shibayama and Hayao Miyazaki. He was a chief animator working with Shibayama after having transferred to a A Production (predecessor to Shin-Ei Animation). He established Ajia-do Animation Works with Shibayama in 1978. Rintaro
is the pseudonym of , a well-known director of anime. He works frequently with the animation studio Madhouse (company), Madhouse (which he co-founded), though he is a freelance director not employed directly by any one studio. He began working in the animation industry—at age 17—as an in-between animator on the 1958 film ''Hakujaden''. His works have won and been nominated for multiple awards, including a nomination for Best Film (''Metropolis (2001 film), Metropolis'') at the 2001 Festival de Cine de Sitges. Rintaro is a fan of science fiction, and has been influenced by American Western (genre), westerns, gangster films, film noir, and French films. Additionally, he was influenced by Osamu Tezuka, and worked with him on ''Kimba the White Lion'' and ''Astro Boy''. Katsuhiro Otomo
is a Japanese manga artist, screenwriter, animator and film director. He is best known as the creator of '' Akira'', in terms of both the original 1982 manga series and the 1988 animated film adaptation. He was decorated a ''Chevalier'' of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2005, promoted to ''Officier'' of the order in 2014, became the fourth manga artist ever inducted into the American Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 2012, and was awarded the Purple Medal of Honor from the Japanese government in 2013. Mamoru Oshii
is a Japanese filmmaker, television director and writer. Famous for his philosophy-oriented storytelling, Oshii has directed a number of acclaimed anime films, including ''Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer'' (1984), ''Angel's Egg'' (1985), ''Patlabor 2: The Movie'' (1993), and ''Ghost in the Shell (1995 film), Ghost in the Shell'' (1995). Shin Oonuma
is a Japanese anime director, animator, and storyboard artist. Oonuma's first employer in the anime industry was Office AO, but he is best known for his contributions to studios Shaft and Silver Link. Career Oonuma's first appearance in anime was as an in-between animator for '' Berserk)'' as a sub-contracting employee of Office AO. He continued working with Office AO, and in 2003 made his debut as an episode director on ''Nurse Me!'' and '' Triangle Hearts ~Sweet Songs Forever~'' under the series direction of Akiyuki Shinbo. is a Japanese director, storyboard artist, and former producer best known for directing '' Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju'' (2016) and '' Kaguya-sama: Love is War'' (2019). is a Japanese screenwriter, director and manga artist. She is one of the most prolific writers currently working in the anime industry. She won the 16th Animation Kobe Award. Personal life Okada was born in Chichibu. She was often bullied at school and skipped days to deal with social anxiety. After leaving middle school, she would spend most of her time confined at home. In spite of this, her proficiency at writing helped to get her into high school, although her social anxiety remained a problem. Shingo Natsume
is a Japanese anime director and animator. He started working in 2003 and after working on ''Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood'' in 2009, he was put in charge of directing his first TV series with ''Space Dandy'' in 2014. Tsutomu Mizushima
is a Japanese animation and sound director. Career Mizushima was born in Chitose, Hokkaido and raised in Hata, Nagano (now Matsumoto, Nagano). He produced independent films in high school and when he graduated from Nagano Prefectural Matsumoto Misuzugaoka High School, he wanted to be a music teacher but gave up on higher education due to being out of work, so he got a job at Shin-Ei Animation in 1986.
