Flag Of Christmas Island
The flag of Christmas Island was unofficially adopted in 1986 after being chosen the winner in a competition for a flag for the territory. It was designed by Tony Couch of Sydney, Australia. The flag was made official in 2002 on Australia Day, when the administrator of the territory, Bill Taylor, presented the flag to the Christmas Island Shire. Design The flag of Christmas Island consists of a green and blue background, split from the top left corner to the bottom right. These colours are intended to represent the land and sea respectively. The Southern Cross constellation appears in the bottom left of the flag similar to the flag of Australia. In the top right, the golden bosun bird (''Phaethon lepturus fulvus'', one of six subspecies of the white-tailed tropicbird) appears. It is considered to be a symbol of the Island. William Albany McKenzie
William Albany "Bill" McKenzie AO (21 May 1928 – 2 May 1991) was an Australian local government politician and public servant from Western Australia. He served as Mayor of Fremantle from 1972 to 1984, head of the Western Australian Planning Commission from 1985 to 1989, and Administrator of Christmas Island (an Australian external territory) from 1990 until his death. McKenzie was born in Fremantle, and was raised in a house on South Street, Beaconsfield. He suffered from polio as a child, and carried his left arm in a sling for the rest of his life. McKenzie trained as a pharmacist, and eventually acquired his own business in Fremantle. He was elected to the Fremantle City Council in 1965, and in 1972 replaced Sir Frederick Samson as mayor. McKenzie continued Samson's emphasis on heritage protection during his term in office. Evan John Williams (born. 1950) is a retired Australian diplomat and public servant who served as the Administrator of the Australian Indian Ocean Territories from 1 November 2003 until 31 October 2005. Early career Evan Williams grew up in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales and was educated at Katoomba High School, graduating in 1968, the first graduating year of the Wyndham Scheme. Williams holds a BA from Australian National University and a Master of Letters from University of New England, Australia. Raymond Leon Stone (September 2, 1923 – June 17, 2013) was an American politician, educator and jazz musician. He served as the Mayor of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, for two consecutive terms from January 1986 to January 1994. Stone was awarded the Eisenhower Liberation Medal by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1988 for his part in the liberation of Wöbbelin concentration camp during World War II, as well as the campaign by the city of Coeur d'Alene against local Neo-Nazi groups in the northern Idaho Panhandle. Commodore William Leonard Taylor, (born 14 September 1938) is a former Australian naval officer and politician. He was a senior officer in the Royal Australian Navy, resigning to run for federal parliament. He represented the Liberal Party in the House of Representatives from 1988 to 1998, holding the Queensland seat of Groom. Ronald George "Ron" Harvey, (born 9 June 1934) is a former senior Australian public servant and sport administrator. He was the third director of the Australian Institute of Sport, serving in the role from 1987 until 1989. Early life Harvey was born on 9 June 1934 in the Perth suburb of Subiaco and attended Perth Boys High School. He left school at the age of fourteen. Sporting career Harvey moved to Canberra in 1960 and became involved in playing, coaching and administrative roles in basketball. In 1967, he played a major role in the Australian Capital Territory breaking away from New South Wales basketball.
