This is a list of active power stations in South Australia, Australia. Candidates for this list must already be commissioned and capable of generating 1 MW or more of electricity. Coal fired Since 2016, there has been no coal-fired power generation in South Australia. The following fossil fuel power stations previously burned coal to power steam turbines that generate some or all of the electricity they produce. Playford A ceased generating in 1985. Playford B ceased operation permanently in October 2015, having been out of operation since 2012. Northern ceased operation permanently in May 2016. Pelican Point Power Station
The Pelican Point Power Station is located at Pelican Point, 20 km from the centre of Adelaide, South Australia on the Lefevre Peninsula. It is operated by Engie (previously known as GDF Suez Australian Energy), which owns 72 per cent of the power station. Mitsui owns the remaining 28 per cent. It burns natural gas in a combined cycle power station, comprising two 160 MW gas turbines and one 165 MW steam turbine, to generate up to 485 MW of electricity. Construction began in 1999. The plant has two GT13E2 gas turbines manufactured by ABB (now Alstom). The plant, including steam turbine and heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), was manufactured and constructed by ABB. Fuel is supplied via either the SEAGas pipeline, which runs from the Iona Gas Plant in Victoria to the Pelican Point power station, or the Moomba Adelaide Pipeline System (MAPS), which supplies gas from Moomba to Adelaide. Dry Creek Power Station
Dry Creek Power Station is a power station at Dry Creek in the northern suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. It is owned and operated by Synergen Power, a joint venture of Engie and Mitsui. The power station has three open cycle gas turbines, each rated at 52MW. It was commissioned in 1973–1974 by the Electricity Trust of South Australia. As well as peaking electricity generation, the power station also provides ancillary services to support electricity grid stability. Dry Creek Power Station was established around 1978. Temporary Generation South
Temporary Generation South and its larger sibling Temporary Generation North were gas turbine power stations in South Australia. They were bought by the Government of South Australia in 2017 as a response to the 2016 South Australian blackout and load-shedding in February 2017. Temporary Generation South was four open cycle gas turbines at the former Port Stanvac Refinery at Lonsdale. The generators were purchased to be used only in emergency shortfalls in electricity supply to the grid, such as in extreme hot weather. They were first used on 24 January 2019 to deal with a supply shortfall in Victoria. Whyalla Steelworks
The Whyalla Steelworks is a fully integrated steelworks and the only manufacturer of rail in Australia. Iron ore is mined in the Middleback Range to feed the steelworks, resulting in the distribution of finished steel products of over 90 different grades. It occupies a 1,000 ha site on the shore of False Bay, Spencer Gulf and is the largest employer in Whyalla, South Australia. Approximately 1.2 million tonnes of raw steel is produced in the steelworks each year, with about 65% of that transferred by rail to Arrium's Market Mills as billets for further processing. The balance of the steel is then converted to finished products at the Whyalla Rolling Mill. These products service the construction and rail transport industries. Quarantine Power Station
Quarantine Power Station is a gas-powered electricity generation facility near the northern end of Torrens Island in the northwestern suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. It is at the opposite end of Torrens Island from AGL Energy's Torrens Island and Barker Inlet power stations. It gets its name from the Torrens Island Quarantine Station which was nearby. Osborne Power Station
The Osborne Power Station is located in Osborne, a northwestern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. Current Today's Osborne Power Station is natural gas powered with one gas turbine and one steam turbine that together generate 180 MW of electricity. In addition to the electricity generated, Osborne produces 410 tonnes/hour of steam. Until Penrice closed in 2014, steam was used by Penrice Soda Products, a soda ash producer, making the power station Australia's largest cogeneration facility. Mintaro Power Station
Mintaro is a historic town in the eastern Clare Valley, east of the Horrocks Highway, about north of Adelaide, South Australia. The town lies at the south-eastern corner of the Hundred of Clare, within the Clare Valley wine region. Established in 1849, Mintaro is situated on land which was bought originally by Joseph and Henry Gilbert, which they sub-divided into 80 allotments. Ladbroke Grove Power Station is a gas-fired power station in the locality of Monbulla near Penola in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia. It was built by Boral Limited in 2000.
