List Of United States Presidential Electors, 2000
This is a list of electors (members of the Electoral College) who cast ballots to elect the President of the United States and Vice President of the United States in the 2000 presidential election. There are 538 electors from the 50 states and the District of Columbia. While every state except Nebraska and Maine chooses the electors by statewide vote, many states require that one elector be designated for each congressional district. Except where otherwise noted, such designations refer to the elector's residence in that district rather than election by the voters of the district. Electoral College (United States)
The United States Electoral College is the group of presidential electors required by the Constitution to form every four years for the sole purpose of appointing the president and vice president. Each state and the District of Columbia appoints electors pursuant to the methods described by its legislature, equal in number to its congressional delegation (representatives and senators). Federal office holders, including senators and representatives, cannot be electors. Of the current 538 electors, an absolute majority of 270 or more ''electoral votes'' is required to elect the president and vice president. If no candidate achieves an absolute majority there, a contingent election is held by the United States House of Representatives to elect the president, and by the United States Senate to elect the vice president. Art Pulaski is an organized labor leader in California. Since 1996, Pulaski has served as Executive-Secretary Treasurer and Chief Officer of the California Labor Federation, which represents 2.3 million workers of 1,200 manufacturing, service, construction and public sector unions. Alec L. Poitevint II (born 1947) is a Georgia businessman and longtime official of the U.S. Republican Party (GOP). In February 2011, he was named by GOP Chairman Reince Priebus to manage the 2012 Republican National Convention, to be held in Tampa beginning on August 27, 2012. Poitevint replaces the team appointed by former RNC Chair Michael Steele, who Priebus fired immediately after his election as chairman in January 2011. In the United States Electoral College, a faithless elector is an elector who does not vote for the candidates for U.S. President and U.S. Vice President for whom the elector had pledged to vote, and instead votes for another person for one or both offices or abstains from voting. As part of United States presidential elections, each state selects the method by which its electors are to be selected, which in modern times has been based on a popular vote in most states, and generally requires its electors to have pledged to vote for the candidates of their party if appointed. Barbara Lett-Simmons (June 4, 1927 – December 22, 2012) was an American politician. She was an openly faithless elector in the 2000 presidential election when she refused to cast her votes in the Electoral College. Early life Lett-Simmons was born in Battle Creek, Michigan. Lett-Simmons was an alumna of Western Michigan University which she graduated from in 1949. Lett-Simmons taught elementary school in Detroit before moving to Washington, D. C. in 1962, then worked as an elementary school teacher in Montgomery County, Maryland until 1965. Margaret Rose Henry (born June 20, 1944) is an American politician. She was a member of the Delaware Senate from 1994 to 2018. In September 2017, Henry announced she would not seek reelection to her District 2 seat. Senator Henry earned her BA from Texas Southern University and her MA from Springfield College. Henry was the first African-American woman elected to the Delaware Senate. During her time in office, she worked to reform the juvenile justice system and helped create a needle-exchange program. Joseph Bernard Rogers (July 8, 1964 – October 7, 2013) was an American politician served as the 45th Lieutenant Governor of Colorado from 1999 to 2003. Early life and education Rogers was born on July 8, 1964, in Omaha, Nebraska to Joe Louis Rogers and Lola Marie Rogers. He later moved with his family to Colorado, and was raised in Commerce City.
