The UK Albums Chart is one of many music charts compiled by the Official Charts Company that calculates the best-selling albums of the week in the United Kingdom. Before 2004, the chart was only based on the sales of physical albums. This list shows albums that peaked in the Top 10 of the UK Albums Chart during 1989, as well as albums which peaked in 1988 and 1990 but were in the top 10 in 1989. The entry date is when the album appeared in the top ten for the first time (week ending, as published by the Official Charts Company, which is six days after the chart is announced). The first new number-one album of the year was '' The Legendary Roy Orbison'' by Roy Orbison. Overall, twenty-five different albums peaked at number-one in 1989, with Gloria Estefan (2) having the most albums hit that position. UK Albums Chart
The Official Albums Chart is a list of albums ranked by physical and digital sales and (from March 2015) audio streaming in the United Kingdom. It was published for the first time on 22 July 1956 and is compiled every week by the Official Charts Company (OCC) on Fridays (previously Sundays). It is broadcast on BBC Radio 1 (top 5) and found on the OCC website as a Top 100 or on UKChartsPlus as a Top 200, with positions continuing until all sales have been tracked in data only available to industry insiders. However, even though number 100 was classed as a hit album (as in the case of The Guinness Book of British Hit Albums) in the 1980s until January 1989, since the compilations were removed this definition was changed to Top 75 with follow-up books such as The Virgin Book of British Hit Albums book only including this data. The Innocents (Erasure Album)
''The Innocents'' is the third studio album by English synth-pop duo Erasure, released on 10 April 1988 by Sire and Reprise Records in the United States and on 18 April 1988 by Mute Records in Germany and the United Kingdom. Produced by Stephen Hague, it was the release that made Erasure superstars in their home country of the UK and gave them their breakthrough in the US. ''The Innocents'' became the first in a string of number-one albums by Erasure in the UK, turning double platinum with sales over 600,000. Thanks to heavy exposure on MTV, it also spawned two major ''Billboard'' Hot 100 hits, a Top 50 placing on the ''Billboard'' 200 and Platinum album certification in the US. Bryan Ferry Order of the British Empire, CBE (born 26 September 1945) is an English singer and songwriter. His voice has been described as an "elegant, seductive croon". ''The Ultimate Collection'' is a greatest hits album by Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music, released on 7 November 1988 by E'G Records. Unlike the 1986 compilation album '' Street Life'', which was predominantly Roxy Music material, ''The Ultimate Collection'' focuses more on Ferry's solo career. It includes the previously unreleased track "He'll Have to Go", a leftover from the 1977 sessions for the album '' The Bride Stripped Bare'', which was also released as a single in 1989, and the track "Help Me" which had been released as a single in the US in 1986 but was unreleased in the UK until this album. ''Money for Nothing'' is a greatest hits album by British rock band Dire Straits released on 17 October 1988, featuring highlights from the band's first five albums. The vinyl edition omits the song " Telegraph Road" and has a different running order. Bananarama are an English pop duo from London, formed as a trio in 1980 by friends Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward. Fahey left the group in 1988 and was replaced by Jacquie O'Sullivan until 1991, when the trio became a duo. Their success on both pop and dance charts saw them listed in the ''Guinness World Records'' for achieving the world's highest number of chart entries by an all-female group. It was issued by London Records in 1988, eight months after the departure of group member Siobhan Fahey.
