Nezihe Araz
Fatma Nezihe Araz (11 May 1920 – 25 July 2009) was a Turkish writer and journalist. In addition to her 1959 best seller on the saints of Anatolia, she wrote several plays for television and the stage as well as three books about Atatürk. Early life Araz was born on 11 May 1920 in Konya. She hailed from the eminent Bulgurzade family, renamed Araz after the Surname Law. Her father, Rıfat Araz, was an officer in Ziraat Bankası and was the bank's director in Konya at the time of her birth; he would later become a Member of Parliament for the Republican People's Party. Her mother's name for Müzeyye and she was the second wife of her father. She graduated from Ankara Girls' High School in 1941 and from the Department of Psychology and Philosophy in the Faculty of Language, History of Geography in Ankara University. Nazan Bekiroğlu
Nazan Bekiroğlu (born 3 May 1957) is a Turkish novelist and academician. Biography She was born on May 3, 1957, in Trabzon. She was the youngest of three children born to a family with an interest in literature. Her father was the owner of a local newspaper called "Target" and was interested in Ottoman history as well as literature. Her father passed away when she was 14 years old. Her father became the hero of the story "Inside a Pain". After completing her primary and secondary education in Trabzon, she went to Erzurum and graduated from Atatürk University, Faculty of Literature, Department of Turkish Language and Literature (1979). Ataol Behramoğlu
Ataol Behramoğlu (born April 13, 1942) is a prominent Turkish poet, author, and Russian-into-Turkish literary translator. Life Ataol Behramoğlu was born on April 13, 1942 in Istanbul. He wrote poems in honour of his father Hikmet Bahramoglu, originally from Azerbaijan, under the name "Bahramoglu". However, his first name was Ataol Gorus in honour of the Goris region where his father grew up. Ataol Behramoğlu graduated from the Department of Russian Language and Literature at the University of Ankara in 1966. In 1970, he published his second book of verse, "''One Day Definitely''". Reprinted many times, this collection of poems was well received as a synthesis of the poetic tradition of Nazim Hikmet (1902-1963) with elements of symbolism and surrealism thrown in. Ahmet Enis Batur (born 28 June 1952, Eskişehir, Turkey) is a Turkish poet, essayist, novelist, and editor. Pelin Batu
Pelin Batu (born 27 December 1978) is a Turkish author, actress, historian, and television personality. Biography Due to her father İnal Batu's career as a diplomat, she spent her childhood in many foreign countries including Pakistan, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France and the USA. She completed high school at Marymount School in New York City and pursued musical and theatre training at Mannes College of Music. After starting literature and philosophy at New York University, she switched her subject to history and completed it at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. She made her film debut in 1999, portraying the role of Circassian Nevres in ''Harem Suare'' and has gone on to act with several more films and TV series. Vecihi Başarın
Vecihi "John" Başarın (; born 1947) is a Turkish Australian historian and author with a special interest in Gallipoli. His research has been instrumental in bringing a Turkish perspective to Australian migration and the ill-fated ANZAC campaign. He is a speaker on the subject of Gallipoli and has co-authored six books in both English and Turkish, used widely as resource material for schools, media, exhibitions and libraries. Başarın has written many articles and conference papers on his research and made guest appearances on television features and radio programs on Gallipoli. For his outstanding service and individual efforts in uniting cultures, Başarın received the Victorian Premier's Award for Excellence in Multicultural Affairs in 2005. In 2010, Başarın was recognised by the RSL as a contributor to understanding and world peace and awarded the ANZAC Peace Prize. He is the only Australian Turk to be so honoured. Samiha Ayverdi
Samiha Ayverdi (25 November 1905 – 22 March 1993) was a Turkish writer and Sufi mystic. Biography Samiha Ayverdi was born in İstanbul to Fatma Meliha Hanim and İsmail Hakkı Bey, an Ottoman military official. She studied at Süleymaniye Kız Numune Mektebi and among other things, learned French and read about philosophy and Islamic mysticism. She became a follower and later official successor of Sufi thinker Kenan Rıfai, who became a major influence in her work. She was the sister of architect and historian Ekrem Hakkı Ayverdi. In 1938, she published her first novel titled ''Aşk Budur'' and followed it with over 30 novels and short story collections. Şevket Süreyya Aydemir
Şevket Süreyya Aydemir (1897–25 March 1976) was a Turkish writer, intellectual, economist, historian, and one of the founders, publisher and a key theorist of ''Kadro'' ("Cadre"). ''Kadro'' was an influential left-wing political journal published in Turkey from 1932 to 1934. He was educated and became familiar with Marxism at Moscow University where he studied economics, and worked as a teacher in Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Russia. He was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Communist Party of Turkey, and attended a Soviet-sponsored Congress for the Peoples of the East in Baku on the Turkish party's behalf. Upon his return to Turkey from the Soviet Union, he wrote for '' Aydınlık'' magazine. The magazine was shut down in 1925 for political reasons, and he was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Ankara Independence Court for the views he had expounded in the magazine. Doğan Avcıoğlu
Doğan Avcıoğlu (1926–1983) was a Turkish writer, journalist and politician. Biography Doğan Avcıoğlu was born in Mustafakemalpaşa ilçe (district) of Bursa Province in 1926. After completing high school, he traveled to France for studies in political science and economy. He returned to Turkey in 1955. In 1956, he began writing in political magazines such as '' Akis''. He joined the Republican People's Party (CHP). He served in the research bureau of the party and wrote in the party paper '' Ulus''. In 1961, he served in the Constituent Assembly of Turkey as a CHP representative. Between 1963 and 1965, he served in the research bureau of TÜRK-İŞ, the Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions. Between 1968 and 1969, he was a member of the consultative committee of CHP. Following the 1971 Turkish military memorandum, he was arrested, but was acquitted.
